    Default 5mge lifters

So Ive taken the head off to replace the valve steam seals and after doing some reading about why my motor was so noisy it seems the lifters might be the culprit. re - (http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=354650)

now I was wondering how you can tell if a lifter needs to be replaced (yes i know i should replace them all but this is my daily and im trying to save) a number of them when i pulled them out basically just fell apart (the little hat bit that holds the nipple in just slipped off) does this mean its needs to be replaced? I can put the lifter in a clamp and compress it down and slide the hat back on and while it does hold it in place should i not do this?

This TSRM suggests that the 'bleed lash adjustor' does not come apart.

I think you'll have to replace any that fall apart - they're basically a leaky piston so if the top comes off you'll have zero gap between cam & follower/valve.

I guess you could re-assemble them and try to crimp the outer lip back over the 'hat' - depends how ghetto you want to get

You'd only change the arms if they've got excessive wear at the obvious spots on them. Unlikely to wear up at the pivot point but if the gaps has got huge (courtesy of the failed bleed lash adjustors), the cam might have have worn gouges in them. If they look OK, re-use them.

Most of the noise is caused by a poorly working pressure regulator (thing in the middle of the head valley at the front).
Pull it off, pull it apart, and clean it out.
