Default 4AGZE - No idle, incredibly rough.

    Hey guys,
have an ae92 trueno, just did a headgasket replacement, everything is back on and it cranks fine, but once its turned over it gives a mighty rev then just splutters and dies. If given a bit of throttle in neutral it will stay alive but it runs incredibly rough. And its pretty erratic.
Looking for some opinions on what to do.

    - Checked timing, all good, had a bit of trouble with the CAS but all is well now.
    - Getting spark, and getting fuel
    - Timing is set fine
    - Unplugged TPS, made no difference so reconnected (was never adjusted/removed when throttle body was taken off)
    - Checked vacuum lines, as far as I know they are all connected and not leaking.

    Suggestions? Help?
    Thanks.

Cam timing or dizzy is in wrong, check timing with a timing light. You got a piccy of the cam gears with the timing at TDC? There's 2 extra notches many people go wrong with when timing the cams. There's alignment notches on the base of the dizzy near the cam drive too.

You check to make sure the notch is visible on the cam through the oil cap? Put a compresison tester on the motor, stufffed cam timing will give you dud compression most of the time.

After learning the hard way on some Eurotrash with incorrect timing marks that nearly clipping the valves on the motor (ended up guessing the timing because a $400 tool is required) I will never in my life remove a timing belt without using a paint pen to put dots on the belt and the cam gears. Transfer the dots to the new belt and you can't do wrong.

Need to invest in a timing light.
Its got coilpacks so cam angle sensor in place of dizzy. I had a bit of trouble setting it up (FWD setup being a bitch and having some sort of pipe running in the way) until I took the cover off and found the last guy had marked both the housing and gear and correctly lined them up. Gonna have to take it out for the 11tyith time I think.

Cam gears are correct for sure. Cant get a pic, once again FWD is a bitch. but notch in cams shows through cap and cam gears are lined up.
For sure. Never changing a belt without a paint marker ever again.

The way to do it if you have no light is to remove and take the cover of the CAS, then set the motor at 10 deg before TDC, you should be able to set the single tooth reset pin trigger dead on the magnetic pickup to get it right with a few goes.

Timing. It's always timing. Get the Toyota manual and follow it to the letter, then double check it all over again.
You are probably a tooth out on the CAS. I do it *every* time..........

Also run 12 deg advance and feed it a strict diet of 98 octane (I find BP Ultimate works best in mine).

Yeah, I reckon. Having yet another go at it tomorrow morning.
I have a 4AGE manual. Only shows settings for distributor, but have been told its pre much the same, except the notch on the housing lines up with the dimple on the shaft.
Its seriously annoying the crap out of me right now. Just want to get it running.

I religiously use BP Ultimate. Just try convince me otherwise.

    Followup

Wasnt getting fuel in the end. the o-ring on injector 1 had a two huge cracks in it and pretty much came off, injector 2 was closely following.
Sleeka spares were very helpful and managed to dig a couple out for me.
Which was odd. It wasnt showing any signs of leaking any fuel. Bit of stupidity. But there we go.
