Default 2JZGTE idle problem and belt squeal

    Howdy all,

I recently puchased myself a lovely 2JZ cressida and im currently trying to iron out some little issues im having with the car.

My first problem is that finally after a week of fucking around with this car getting a new gearbox in and getting it rego'd i set sail for my first drive in it this afternoon. After warming it up in the driveway as soon as it got warm (about 72 degrees) the idle started going up a few hundred rpm and then dropping, it started getting higher and dropping lower until it eventually died.

The car runs a microtech lt12 and has had the idle control valve removed and blocked off. It has a non TRC throttle also, checked for any loose hoses or vacuum leaks and wasn't able to find anything.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to what to look for? Is there anything else to check or some test i can do?

Also the belt has a rather loud squeal to it as soon as its revved past 1500rpm, the belt has tension and doesn't look to be that old. Ive removed the belt and checked for any seized pulley's and nothing, i had the alternator rebuilt also. The only thing that looks out of the ordinary is it has an aftermarket alloy water pump pulley, could this cause it to constantly squeal?

    Any input appreciated!

In regards to the belt squeal I would try running some sandpaper (400 grit) over the alloy pulley to take off any shine and see if it makes it better. This won't last long but will give you some idea as to the location of the noise, this can also be done on the tensioner pulley. I usually do it while the car is running but this will depend on how much room you have and if you can do it safely.

As for the idle problem most common would be Vacuum leak, then ignition timing settings but I'm not that up on microtech setups but incorrect timing on haltech can cause car to surge

    I hope that helps

have you tried actually replacing the belt?.. as they do get hard..

also, have you done a compression test or fuel pressure test when hot?.. how does it rev up when its hunting on idle?

Id be looking into your harmonic balancer too, they're reknowned for dropping off at any given time !

Or hit the belt with some silicone spray....

yes thats the one i bought, it has a ross harmonic balancer so i dont think its going to fall apart anytime soon. The belt itself doesnt look that old but ill replace it anyway. Ive spayed it with silicone spray but it keeps squealing after a while

There goes that theory then with the balancer ! With those AM balancers they need slightly larger accessory belts not saying that's the cause but something to look at.

Nice purchase too ! 2J with manual are fantastic......

OK a brand new belt later, no good. Infact worse some how! With the old belt you could spray it with belt spray and it would stop squealing temporary but with the new belt, no amount of spray will stop it. It doesnt squeal on idle but 1400 - 1500 it squeals so loudly i think im going deaf trying to find the problem, and i still havent driven this car yet!

As for the idle problem i think its fixed, i had to rewire the tps because it was incorrectly wired and acting like a switched type tps and caused the plugs to foul. But correctly wired now, re-calibrated the tps and a new set of plugs and it purrs like a kitten.

I will take some pics of the belt setup but it is like any other 2j just without the air compressor.

Both problems sorted! Big thanks to the kind stranger that gave me some advice while he was fixing his daughters car outside my house today. Turns out it was the belt configuration. The belt wasnt getting enough grip on the crank
