Thanks Chuckster, I found a full rebuild kit from the states on ebay for about $180 and round the same for freight to Aus kit included everything, slugs, gaskets, water pump not sure on quality but price looked good.

And o_man_ra23 thats why I want to do it myself this engine thats in it now is a (GEM) engine going by the rocker cover sticker doesn't look like its that old but its stuffed. The xchange engines I've found are up near $1000 and are only reringed and bearings with reco'd head for a bit more including machining I think I can do it myself with new slugs. Obviously ARP head studs and a towing cam are going to add to the cost but I don't want to have to be doing it again in 1-2 years time cause I was a tight a

have you considered using something like a commodore V6 ? more torque for towing. easy and cheap to get. been done before.

    (grabs torch and pitchfork)

Where do we start with the crummodore V6?? The death rattle they get in the bottom end?? The ageing electronics which were of a substandard quality to begin with?? The Bog Warmer/BTR 4 speed auto which likes to throw in the towel randomly?? The extra $300 a year on your rego bill?? The extra insurance cost of a modified vehicle?? Sorry to be negative, however for something which is easy and cheap to get, it is a PITA long term.

The pistons which crumbled in my hands were also from a GEM... the only other time I have seen that happen was when I ran waaaayyyy too much boost combined with not enough fuel and too much timing in my 18R-GTE version 1. All caused by a little block-off which disappeared onto the side of the road somewhere, combined with a nut loose behind the wheel

Just found the website with the metal backed timing chain guides I was talking about if anyone was interested.

Well said O_man_ra23 if I was going to do a conversion it certainly wouldn't be a V6 commo engine Briney but thanks for the suggestion. I've also killed a few ring lands in my time when I was younger in a VL turbo educating myself to what that (PINGING NOISE) was and how expensive it can be.

So finally got the engine out and pulled most of it apart to find that the heads not the issue its the timing chain, guides and timing cover. The timing chain obviously stretched and destroyed the guide which let the chain chew through the timing cover right beside the water pump outlet.

That sounds a bit easier to fix. Have you also checked the rings?? I would pull the pistons out and re-ring/re-bearing regardless. Good to hear the head is still good. You should be checking the valve seating (give them a lap even) as a matter of course.

Yeah mate pistons are out hoping to get it honed and re ringed with all new bearings, will get head serviced while its off and shaved to make sure its not warped not sure how hot its been.

Ordered new timing chain kit with the metal backed guide, new timing cover, oil pump and water pump with a rock crawler/towing cam and springs to suit, $390 delivered from USA from engnbldr.com. crow cams wants $300 or so just for the cam. Also ordered an ARP head stud kit and a cometic head gasket before i realised the issue wasn't the head or gasket so I'll fit those anyway. Will need to get block decked with the new timing cover bolted on I should imagine to make sure they are same height am looking for a bit more compression anyway!

Can anyone tell me how much can be shaved from head or decked from block before there issues with valves hitting pistons or issues with the timing chain/adjuster set up?

So thats it freshen engine up with towing cam, 32/36 weber and extractors and 2 1/4 inch exhaust.

Yeah, you will need to deck the block with the timing cover on. I would minimise the amount of block decking you do or you will run into troubles with the pistons encroaching into the squish area on the head when hot (unless it is a dome head, in which case it isn't an issue)

Hey guys been doing alot of research on 22R engine and started to lean towards fitting a 3RZ instead, bit newer and nicer to drive with extra power and fuel injection.

Has anyone on the site done the conversion (22R out and 3RZ in) if so can you throw a link up?

    thank you.
