This will not go down well ....
But i would put in a SR20 DET i think thats the correct bit ( DET ) ..Out of a later S15 . VVTI & 6 speed gearbox, but i think they are pretty pricey though .. $ 5 plus grand ? ..
Good Power & will still handle the same if not better as you know they are all allloy engines ..

im going to go out on a limb and say:

    3vz
    gt adaptor ring
    w50

but you've also told us very little about your goals or intended application
other than you want it to be economical
if you wanted economy you could stick with the standard 4k.

ps. 304 or 308 is over capacity to weight guidelines for the NCOP if that applies to you

ask yourself, do u have the budget for not only the engine but the diff upgrade, custom tailshaft, fuel system, brakes and engineering?

Money and fabrication isant a problem im a boilermaker by trade, i was thinking of the 18R due to the old school appeal i can chop diffs up and weld them back together we have the jigs at work for alignment, can heat treat and re spline as well, btw im in SA whats engineering? lol whack it in and drive it. I have already got the upgrade suspension and brakes on the go atm. I was seriously contemplating 1JZ but i don't wanna be messing around with the firewall and tunnel, and Ive been down the 1jz path before... Ive got $3,500 to spend on motor and box atm but then again economy etc i don't know whether i should do it up old school spec or go crazy on the new school technology 18R-GEU is a 2ltr old school motor an it has a turbo manifold so that could be the start to the upgrades. The cars only going to have 2 seats im already in the process of cutting all the MDF Board and carpeting to cover where the back seats were and to reline the boot and help with the stereo install. I'm going to start the body work soon but im going to need the motor before i do because im going to respray under the hood etc after the test fits and mounts are made. Cheers for the reply's and input. Still trying to decide.

18r's including 18r-g are a bit of a poo motor and a bit of a squeeze in the 30
i reckon stick with t engine engine if you want naturally aspriated period style four cylinder.
    reasoning:

can use existing gearbox crossmember and tailshaft
t50 box is an easier fit to the existing tunnel
fundamentally a better engine than R engine

if you want a later four cylinder retrotech thing you could look at 4a (easier) or 3S (headfuck).

You say you want good fuel economy, so that eliminates a lot of options including V8's and JZ's. You say you don't want to mess around with the firewall or tunnel so that eliminates any inline six. The leaves us with small-ish 4 cylinder engines.

If you want old-school I'd recommend the 2T-GEU, and if it's a bit small for your liking make it a 3T-GEU hybrid. The 18R-G makes more power but it's a heavy bitch and significantly larger, so IMO the 3T option would be a better outcome.

For something more modern I'd go with a 4A-GE, atmo or super/turbocharged according to taste. They're nice and compact, get good fuel economy and there is shitloads of knowledge out there for getting power out of them. IMO the 3S is more trouble than it's worth but if you want a big project it's worth considering.

Cheers Norbie, i know what your saying i got a 3t i could get but i really cant be arsed with 8 spark plugs and the rest of the part issues this is also another problem with the 18R Ive been looking into the silver and black top 4A's only noticeable difference is compression and a few HP. Still looking i might just sell the rolla and stay with the celica an save for a house i don't know what to do... or just hold onto the rolla save all ma cash then do something stupid to it who knows what the future holds. Ive done all the manual conversion on the inside and have all the cables etc but atm its an auto 4k BORING and its slow as well you know a corolla so yeah i need something i can sit on the freeway with as the misses has just moved another 400 miles away... O btw celica for sale ill post that up in cars for sale here is a pic. How much they going for 170,xxx kms clean and has been raised reg service etc
