Im always afraid of the 'while you're there you might as well..." factor, and anything to do with head work seems to cost billions when this factor is applied!!

I guess if you can just do the valve springs and retainers without pulling the head off, it would be no worries.

Thinking about it, for the relatively cheap price of springs & retainers, you 'might as well'...

Longer duration does not require strong valve springs.
More valve lift or higher redline does...

From what i have researched and i have done a lot of the last couple months as i'm currently freshening up my engine

i run HKS 264 in my car i read and was advised from around the place 8500 is about the limit of stock springs but 8000 is a more reasonable limit if you understand what i'm trying to say

i ended up getting BC valve springs with Ti retainers i will be running meth injection so my limit will be around 9000rpm ( i have got more mods to help rev to this) lets hope the turbo can flow that high >_<

Yeah I know what you mean. I wasn't going to do the cams at first but my valve stem seals were buggered so i guess it just grew from there. It only cost me $1000 for the cams and springs and this included the cost of installing and doing the stem seals while he was at it which is quite reasonable.

264's would be cheaper but if you were going to spend the money you may as well get the bigger of the 2 and do the springs while your at it. this way you know theya re done and the motor is safe to increase the rev cut without any issue.

Have you looked into running 264 on the inlet side and 274 on the exhaust?

Jamie at Forced Performance and Tuning. There in Toowoomba. He did a good deal for me as he is using me build a car to do on the side. Kristians Cressida (sleepercorty) has his tuning and mods done there. Very reasonable pricing and wont Bulls**t you into stuff you don't need. Does good work as well.

Im not sure where in QLD you are but if you want his number i can give it to you?

Im in Brisvegas mate, with a car thats nowhere near driveable, but certainly good to know in the future as its something i would like to do prior to tuning.

Off topic and totally random, but have you run into a stout bright orange R33 GTR with black wheels out that way by any chance?? I was in T-bah for work at the start of the year and this GTR stalled at a set of lights and wouldn’t start, so we gave him a push to the side of the road, got talking to this bloke, turned out it was a full house RB26 with a T88-34d, made something like 780hp @ 4 wheels the bloke said...

There are some tough cars out that way, i’d be keen to come for a drive on a Friday or Saturday night to watch some shenanigans!!

    Cheers

    Dan,

You should consider doing the cams before tuning as they will need to be tuned after installation cause the will need to tinker around with the powerband.

Not sure about the r33 but sleepercorty may know. I live in brissy as well but im getting my car built in tmba as i used to live up there and knew the guys from before. A mate of mine has got a bit of work done at B-Rad performance at slacks creek if you wanted something a bit more local but i havent had anything done through him. Ive seen a heap of nice cars in there tho and a mx73 cressy with an auto 2jz and t04z making high 400hp atw. He has to be doing something right.

hey mate, got my customers car tuned with 272's, on 13psi it made 380rwhp.. i wanted to go to 22 psi and dial the cams around to make more power but there was a software issue with the ecu and it needs to go back for warrenty... in the midrange it leans off by itself no matter how much fuel the tuners puts in and he said over 13psi theres gunna be a noticeable lean spike

runs and sounds awesome, drives like a dream... im totally going 272's in my car, unless anyones got a direct comparison saying they can feel 264's kick in earlier and giving a better mid range on the street..

otherwise, im happy! ... btw was with standard springs and retainers, absolutely tears tyres off in third.. loves it

    Well i have 280rwkw

1J with GT3037 with the 264 cams i make no boost till 2800-3000 but have my full 16psi by 3500 and by 4000rpm im at 200rwkw. and it keeps going till 7500 before injectors become the issue (have got new injectors yet to go in though)

really makes no boost till 2800? my vvti 1jz with 264 264 cams and gtx3076 make some boost as soon as you put your foot down and makes 10psi by 3k and 20 psi by about 3600-3700 made full peak torque at 4000rpm and peak power at 7100 ish
so you get nothin before 2800 or?
although i am running a 25nb size steampipe highmount turbo manifold to keep velocity up
