Installing ARP head studs (7MGTE)

Hey fellas,

Im going to be installing some arp head studs in the next few days, I'm just wondering on what the correct procedure is... I understand you have to torque them up, undo them, torque them up again, and repeat. Keeping in mind mine are brand ner
If you can tell me how you did it, it would be great. I will be using moly lube during the installation.

Another question I have is, what sort of sealant should I use between the gasket and block/head, I will be using a standard (compsite) gasket.

Get yourself some Hylomar, which is available in a tube or a spray can. The spray is much better for getting a nice even coat over both sides of the HG.
As for the stud install techniques, they come with a pretty good set of instructions don't they? At least mine did, I'll be installing them at some stage next week, so I guess if there's any tricks to it this thread should come in handy!

u r basically right, u have stretch them, torque once, loosen, twice, loosen and then a third time

Use molly lube
Make sure threads in block are chased and clean
DO NOT install the studs tightly only finger tight!

go and buy the correct tap for the block, take the new studs to a nut and bolt shop to match up the thread, pretty sure they are 10x1.25, may be 1.5 tho

yes, only use the supplied moly lube

Yeah M10x1.25, not always easy to find.
Otherwise get a hacksaw & cut a few slots in an old head bolt & run in down & up the thread, saves a few bucks.

Does chases mean using the tap (or old head bolt) on the thread? I have that sized tap at work...

I havnt read the supplyed instructions yet just got them... will do then ask some more questions...

also remember to put lube on the surface on the head that the nut is going to seat on, this also ensures a correct tension.

yes, quite important to only wind the studs in finger tight

Ok after reading the instrauctions, the procedure is as following... one thing, do I lube up all mounting hardware (threads, nuts and washers)?

1. clean & tap all bolt threads on the block
2. grease hardware, install suds into block hand tight
3. coat gasket with holymer, both sides
4. place gasket on, followed by head
5. install all nuts finger tight
6. follow toyota installation pattern, at 20ft/pound, then up by 10ft/pound to 80ft/pound
7. undo studs in toyota pattern, same torqure sequence as above
8. do up same as 6, undo same as 7, then do it again
9. enjoy....

Or am i missing something

80 is in the ARP guide, but the progressions are from what I have gathered on forums and out of my head...

Are you supposed to UNDO to a set torque? Sounds difficult, unless you totally undo the bolt, then re-tension it...pretty long-winded to do that for all the bolts 6 times...

I dont think your torque specs are right.

You should do them to the ARP recommended torque not the toyota torque

assuming the instructions supplied with the ARP bolts are correct, using ARP moly lube its 80ft pound, using motor oil its somewhere around 110 foot pound
