Default Injector Issues? 3sge conversion, running rich.

    Hi Toymoders,

I have a problem with my work car at the moment, that just appeared out of the blue, with no hard driving. Sorry fot the long write up; the specs are:

SV21 Camry wagon, Gen 1 3sge (from a st162 Celica) has been rebuilt, done 40,000 k's but sat in a shed for a year or so unused... has a new timing belt and water pump seals.
Micrtotech LT10-s ECU, X4 box, four bosch ignition coils, with 8.8mm top gun leads, platinum plugs. AFM removed.
GTE fuel filter, Sard RJ Fuel Pressure Reg, with Pressure gauge.
Only ever run premiuim or ultimate since I turned the key.

When I picked up the car from the dynotuners, they had set the fuel pressure at 50 psi at idle. The car ran great for about a month, except on the odd occasion it would start to idle funny then want to die, and seemed to run a bit rich most of the time (I have the microtech hand controller velcroed to the dash). When this would happen you could just put your big toe on the accelerator and she would rev up and be happy... but you would see the AFR jump up to 19:1 every once in a while, even when driving.

So with the intention of getting a few things tided up, and then a retune I have been living with this problem, and its thirst for fuel. Then on Sat things went pearshaped. I started the car, drove it for 5 mins then turned her off, upon restart the car started to run badly, and would cough, sputter and carry on, and would only move if I reved it to 30% throttle - any more or less and the car would not accelerate. AFR where at a constant 19:1 in any gear at any speed.

So towed her home and started looking about for problems. Popped the bonnet and checked out the fuel pressure and its sitting at 10 psi. I figured the old Camry pump had given up the ghost, so I pulled out my fuel tank yesterday, cleaned it out and fitted a Walbro G342 pump (255l/h) unit. The fuel had ome small metal fragments in it, apparently this is common, from friction caused by fuel bowsers???

Anyways, put er all back together and checked the fuel pressure: now 20 psi with a bigger newer pump??? Well below the OEM 32-38 psi, the car still carried on, so I tried to wind the reg up but no dice, F/P did not want to increase. AFR sit on a constant 19:1 now.

Checked that all four coils are sparking and working happily. After a few (fair few ) attempts to start her she spat a gutfull of fuel out the rear of the car.

So my thoughts are the only thing left it could be are sticking/faulty injectors? A blocked return or supply line wouldn't cause this???

    Any help appreciated

Did you fix the fuel pressure issue? Sounds to me like a dodgy fuel pressure regulator?

or maybe a blocked fuel filterline, if you say you've got metal floating around. 19:1 is extremely lean.

did you check the fuel pressure with the IGN on but motor not running/cranking?

I'd avoid running the car until you can get 38-40psi at the rail with pump on and motor not running. Then pull some injectors and see if they're all wetting the same. Driving with 19:1 AFRs will kill pistons and other things.

Well thought I would take RA35GT's advice, and put the stock reg back on. She now starts and drives happily, but still runs lean past 50% throttle, as the fuel pressure is down to stock now from 50 psi.

By the way I think the Sard RJ reg i got was fake - has a red sticker, although I have read reports saying beware of the blue stickers...

Back to the dyno tuners for a retune and possibly GTE injectors now...

    Thanks for yor help everyone!

I'd also be asking the tuner why the fuck they lifted the fuel pressure to 50psi? and perhaps consider choosing someone else to tune your car.

Really, is 50 Psi a bit high? This was my first trip to the dyno...

Yeah I think I will get someone else to retune her.

    Thanks
