it may block the heater core when cold, to reduce warm up times
Hey everyone, im changing the thermostat on my 4age motor (ae82 remote housing style) and the thermostat i brought is slightly different, but it is the correct one according to the Dayco catalogue.
Here is a pic. the OLD one is on the LEFT. NEW one on the RIGHT.
the new thermostat is shorter there for not reaching the back part of the housing which basically blocks off the rear pipe that is coming from either the water housing on the back of the 4ag head or straight from my heater core.(i cant remember which sorry!)
refer to this pic:
I'd like to know exactly how these style of thermostats work.
You know with commodore v6's how they are just a very short bodied thermostat? why do a lot of toyota thermostats have the rear piece on them that blocks the heater piping?
Would i be wrong in calling the toyota thermostats a two stage/two way design?
Does everybody think the new thermostat will work just the same?
Hope someone can understand what im trying to get at.
thanks![]()

The thermostat is just shutting the bypass pipe that's used to speed up warm up time that sucks hot water from the water outlet of the head. Without it you're not using your radiator at full efficiency.
Cheers for the tip Cuzzo. i brought the dayco one only because i can get it for 13bucks through my work. I know the toyota ones are actually reasonably priced from memory. (25-35bucks?)
i popped it in today and the car is now holding a steady temp which makes the idle much better.(idling around 1000rpm instead of 2000rpm.. )
