Default fun stuff - HUD speedo display

    hiya !

just had one of those whacky crazy thoughts today on what fun stuff you could put on a car

Id there , by any means - a LCD type screen , and a speedo signal box that one could purchase ( saY FROM JAYCAR ) that you could use , witzl laptop projector style - to produce a HUD , beamed up onto the windscreen ..

i was thinking an electronic speedo display - pulled to bits , with the LCD backlit somehow up onto the screen above the dash.

some cars have this factory now - but i just think one would be cool instead of having to look down all the time , in fear of the speed camera fiends ..

Just a fun idea - any thoughts ?

I built a similar thing many years ago to display track information and stuff off a carputer. I used a high brightness LCD in mirror mode and attached it to the dash. I put a piece of clear contact on the windscreen to provide a slightly opaque reflection.

Worked pretty well, and i always intended to make an offboard PIC to read RPM and other sensors, but never got around to it.

    Pretty simple.

defi make hud's and a few other mobs do, some of the 180sx nissans had huds.
the only prob with them is direct sunlight.

the 180sx's had them as an option.. as have corvettes for many years. although around here the 180sx units are probaly a little eaiser to come by.. surely it would be easier to nut out how they work.. and rig it up ?

i imagine it'd be a square wave signal from the guage cluster giving it speed and another for rpm signal ? shouldnt be too hard to rig together...

you also usually need some form of a reflection point style thing on the windscreen so you can see it properly.

id probaly look at using these parts before i went building anything from scratch ? just a thought.. although i know the from scratch options can do more it would just be nice to be able to use easy to get bits

because we use the motec ADL's racing dont use huds! they would be more of a distraction eg even a scratch on the windsreen can put you of a bit. plus the problem of direct sunlight when you are doing laps opposed to driving on the road. the direct sunlight comes around every lap etc.
you could make a nice little hud display using lexan etc. just cut it out with a jigsaw and glue it together. you would want to be able to turn down the brightness or it could be a pain at night.

Sorry kingmick there already is a module for that. It was slated for the top end Pioneer deck, and the Sony Ericcson bluetooth sets. But the cost of having different voices for reading everything put the cost up too much.

lol... "easy left", "easy right.... maybe"

I wonder if you could get it to tell you when there is one of those pesky adelaide light poles in your racing line?
