Default 3tgte rotor position*nd timing issue

did some searching to no real answer on the issue. I have a 3tgte in my 85 celica gt-s and I replaced the headgasket and when putting it back together I got it at tdc and cams both pointing up and am not sure where the rotor in the distributor is supposed to point since there are 2 contacts. firing order is correct. I just need to know which of the 2 contacts (closest to cap or closest to dizzy base) points to what and where it points. I assume it points at 1F but im not sure. also need to know what the oil capacity is. it has a larger finned pan and a fluidyne oil cooler and twin entry ct26. im assuming around 7qts and it was running amsoil 0w20 but it was leaking out of the old slug like crazy so any suggestions from personal experience would be awesome. finding answers here in the states with this motor is like pulling teeth. thanks everyone. -Ryan

With the engine on top dead centre firing stroke (difficult to tell if it is firing stoke without looking at the cams so use trial and error) Both rotor contact should be pointing to piston 1 cap contacts i.e. 1R and 1F (noting they both fire at the same time).

    So
    1. put the engine on what you think is top dead centre firing stoke (note it may note be because you didn't look at the cams)

    2. place dizzy in the engine so that rotors line up with 1r and 1f and the adjustment bolt is in the middle of the adjustment slot. This may take a few goes untill you get good at it as the rotor rotate as you place it in.

    3. put all you coil and plugs on.

    4. The engine will either run or give you a massive back fire, if it dose nothing unbolt the dizzy bolt and rotate untill something happens, if nothing happens check you are getting spak from the coil, if getting spark form the coil go back to step 1.

    5. If you get a massive back fire you are 180deg out on the dizzy (360deg on the crank). put the engine on top dead centre and check rotor line up with cap 1r and 1f. If they line up rotate crank 360deg untill back on top dead centre remove dizzy and move onto step 2. If they don't line up don't rotate crank 360deg and move onto step 2.

    6. your engine should be running if the cams are installed correctly, put a timing light on and adjust the dizzy until the crank marks line up.

    Hope this helps

Good to hear it is running, with larger cams, larger turbo etc you are going to need to adjust that air flow meter to get the right fueling, suggest you get a dyno tune to make sure you don't run lean.

Did you make your own maps or use someone else's for the MS?

What modifications do you have? I have a few maps from members on here which might be of interest to you for starters?

    buzzbomer85gt,
