    Default 1GGTE - won't rev under load

    hay guys,
just finished (almost) my hilux, got a 1ggte with a single t3/t4 on it. now the timing is right i checked it with a timing light and its bang on 0. it seems to idle fine, but even in neutral when you push the peddle down it doesn't want to rev past like 3k maybe ( i don't have a tacho).
it feels restricted, it doesn't cough and splutter just sounds like its trying to drive up a hill but not going anyway.

fyi - o2 plugged in, all but 1 water temp sensor plugged in ( it was like this before and never had a drama) and the cold start is yet to be plumbed in.

    any ideas?

Could be VR sensor wires (from your crank angle or distributor) wired around the wrond way?

Could be map sensor not pluged in or working, or

Air flow meter not pluged in or working properly. or

Ignition not advancing, in some type of limp mode or test mode

Recheck the mechanical timing mate, I had the exact same thing with my 7m when I rebuilt it.

yes mate mine would start and idle fine, soon as you rev'd it, it behaved like a bucking bull till about 3k then wouldnt rev any more. I tried new leads/coils/afm/different CPS etc etc etc all turned out to be I had done the mech timing incorrectly.

ar crap. i hate pulling the front of this bloody thing, done it too many times.
so when i did the timing belt i put the crank at 0 ( i put the cog alignment piece at the top and when you put the balancer back on it lines up with the 0 on the cover), then both cam wheels with the dot mark facing the middle lines on the top of the backing plate, put the belt on only slighty tightened the tensioner. turned the engine over twice made sure all marks on balancer and cams lined up again. did it again just to be sure and they did.. have i missed anything?

also with the dizzy, when the crank was at tdc i aligned the no.1 lead with the middle arm on the dizzy. put everyhting back on on checked it with a timing light and it read at 0.

ok update.. changed timing with the gun to 5 degress adv, it will rev easier now but still wont come on boost. i was able to go down the road and fill it up with new fuel tonight, but no boost.
it doesn't jump or hop, just sounds like an N/A engine on full load but the revs aren't going anywhere.. if i like keep on the throttle the can will accelerate through the revs.

i have disconnected the battery twice for 20mins at a time to try and reset the ecu, but no change. is there a pin or two i can short to clear a code?

timing should be 10 deg with timing light shouldnt it?
jumping pins T and E1 in the diagnostic connector in the engine bay, this will defeat the advance and give you base timing.

timing should be around 10, 8 is usually standard.. also, sounds like either your cam timing is out or your air flow meter is shagged

i'll try setting the base timing to 10 tonight. i have tried 2 air flow meters, the first one was working fine when the car went off the road 4months ago, the other had a drama at idle (kept hunting, most of the time it was very low idle and would adjust) this one seems to work fine now at idle too.

what do you mean cam timing out? do i just check that when it is a TDC that the cam marks line up?

Make sure you have the pins T and E1 in the diagnostic connector bridged as stated above.

    ok.. i give up..

tried retiming to 10 degress with the connector bridged ( although there isn't a T on its only there is a T1 or Ti) to E1, shut off, started again and went for a drive and same thing..

turned dizzy 180 degrees, wouldnt start. when i stopped cranking it let out a massive pop.

    i've run out of ideas

Last time I had a problem like this it turned out to be the fuel pump. No fault codes, nothing had changed. Just the fuel tank had been dry for a bit and the pump wasn't working at full capacity. Disconnect the return hose and put a container under it and short the fuel relay. Motor would free-rev quite happily, but as soon as there was load the motor would bog down.

With the motor off you should get over 1L of fuel in a minute or the pump is had it.

yeh, put number 1 piston on TDC on compression stroke and check cam marks line up, sounds like thats your issue

also while its on TDC make sure your dizzy is lined up properly
