    Default 1JZ smoky

Need a bit of help with this one guys. My 1jz started blowing smoke recently. Blue smoke, oily smell. Started out as an intermittent problem, happening at different engine loads and speeds each time I drove the car (first couple of times was 2 weeks between each occurance), now it only happens at idle, and when cruising the accelerator. This makes me think vacuum related.

If I start the car and let it sit idling, after about 5 minutes it starts to smoke. There is no smoke at initial star-up. If I load up the engine (auto in gear and brake/accelerator on) or rev it it just blows more smoke. Once I start driving it's a different story. When I pull up it smokes like all buggery but I can load up the engine to about 1200-1300rpm and the smoke goes away. Normal acceleration gives no smoke, but easy deceleration gives smoke, with more smoke if I completely let off the gas. Hard acceleration (even at neutral) gives off more of a light grey/blue colour smoke, whereas idling is very blue.

Cleaned out the PCV and Idle control valves with carby cleaner, no difference. Oil and filter change, same. Compression is around 180-185psi in all except cyl 2 which had 165. Car idles perfect. no oil in the water when I changed it. Pulled off intake pipes from turbos, minimal play in the turbo shafts (no in-out play, only up-down). Did notice though that the intake pipe to the front turbo was quite oily, coming from the breather tube hooked up to the rocker cover. No apparent blow-by coming from the oil filler either.

Need some ideas guys... this ones stumped me

Well from what I can remember from past experience bad valve stem seals don't start as an intermittent problem and don't blow this much smoke straight away. Also they usually cause smoke on initial startup whereas I have no smoke at startup.

Sounds like turbo oil seals. Had the same fault with my car when I owned it.

Also check your PCV valve is operational, if its blocked you will get smoke like a turdbro oil seal is gone.

The new PCV from Toyota is a bit straighter and is meant to fix the blow by problem the old 1JZs had. Made a bit of a difference in mine. I don't know how much smoke it's blowing now, but there was now oil in the front turbo's inlet pipe this time and the dip stick doesn't lift as much as it used to.

thats not too bad, its what i would of assumed rebuilding a ball bearing turbo would cost.
i know bush bearing turbo's are alot cheaper/easier to rebuild
