is it possible to recondition a radiator fan clutch

yeah so after finding out how much a new fan clutch from toyota would be, I was wondering if anything can be done to the existing clutch to make it like new again?
are any parts serviceable (at home) or can anyone actually recondition them?
most things on the web point to 'take off existing fan and clutch, get replacement clutch, put fan and clutch back on again....'
anyone attempted this and had some form of success?

You can refill some of them but useally the reason why the fail is the fluid.leaks out and most people dont replace that seal.

If it's a viscous fan, then Toyota sell the "fluid" in a small tube (sized like small ointment you get from chemist).
I haven't bought any for a while because it was something that the owners of older Subarus had to do because Subaru would only sell the complete fan.

Ask for 80 series Landcruiser I think.

Take the fan off, undo the phillips screws from around the clutch, separate the two pieces then put some viscous fan oil in there(about 1-2 tubes) then bolt it back together.

did it on my patrol, fixed it up real good.

just ask toyota for some silicon fluid. im pretty sure thats what it is, they should know what your talking about anyway. about 10 or 15 per tube. i used 2

when you open it up, it might be nice and clean, or it will be grey and sludgy, as the oil has lost its oilyness and started grinding the insides of the fan to a paste.

best bet either way is to use some sort of solvent cleaner stuff, i used a bottle of some selleys stuff i cant remember the name of now, but was sorta like acetone, but thinners or anything would probably do a similar job, its hard to find anything that really gets the old stuff moving, i spent a while with a rag and a blower cleaning it chasing it all away as best i could, then you just squeeze as much new stuff in there as you can, so its full as full can be, in between the different parts through the holes etc and see how it goes

ok so i have found some information out about adding the oil procedure (seems to be popular on 4wd forums).
there are a couple of hurdles to still work out.
there are three potential oils
08816-03001
08816-06001
08816-10001
so I assume one of these is required but i don't know which one yet

there is an o-ring that looks like toyota don't have a replacement part for
Matty12 - do you know where the replacement seal can be found?

if its just an o-ring you could just get a generic replacement item?

plenty of info on outerlimits4x4 about it, and patrol4x4.

i would have thought silicon fluid was silicon fluid....
does anyone say the difference between those 3 part numbers?

Might be worth trying to find a replacement seal/o-ring in the harder wearing viton to ensure it lasts.

When I did mine they only stocked one of the three part numbers anyway. I bought two tubes and two years later still going strong.
