Do the other pins that are good slide ok on the stuffed rod?
The rod might just need a slight linish to free it up a little.
Hi all, starting to reassemble the 1MZ.. I've noticed 1 of the rods is tight on the gudgeon pin. The other 5 you can move the rod easy enough without it grabbing and turning the pin.
But this 1 is tight and the pin moves within the piston instead of the rod. I've knocked the pin out and cleaned it all up and knocked back in but still the same.
Tried a spare pin and didn't help so it is the rod not the pin. The other pins/rods it seems that the pin can just slide into the rod where this one needs to be hammered in/out.
Is this ok or bad?
Thanks
Joel

Nah no pin slides into this rod nicely.. all need encouragement of a hammer.
where the other rods/pins can be firmly pushed in with thumb.
Check the inside of the rod for any marks or dags then give it a rub with a bit of 1200 or get the rods resized
A bit of dowel will help make sure the material is removed evenly.
Also, if you tape a flap of 1200 grit to a drill bit, you can use it as a flap wheel to make the work easy.
Is it meant to be a floating rod pin design in the little end or is it meant to be a interference fit ? maybe the other 5 rods are too loose / worn ? ...
had a tight rod when i built my 400chev, old engine builder mate of mine said lube up the pin and hold one end in a soft jawed vice tap the rod on and work it round and round in the centre of the pin where it normally sits, took about 3 or 4 revolutions and it came as loose as the others, this assumes you have cleaned up the little end as you have said in your post and their are no dags etc, apparently quite common on aftermarket rods- mine were Eagle i beams.
Can you check the small end for 'round' and that it's true? Wasn't the rod off the spun bearing by any chance?

As justen said, check for roundness. Specially if its a second hand rod/small end bush. Its also very common for the little end bush to crack if detonated on or abused, when this happens it can become dislodged and misaligned which could be causing the tightness. Give yourself some piece of mind and have 6 new little end bushes installed and rehoned i reckon![]()
Not spun rod, replaced that with a spare. Will have engine machine man look at it when shop opens in new year I think.
best to be safe for sure
