Default about to buy 2jz aristo, bad turbo or not?

    Hey guys

I just took a 1992 Aristo for a test drive yesterday and have some concerns. As you can see from the title it has a 2jz-gte TT engine. While driving it the guy said the car had been modified in Japan so the turbos don't work sequentially, and while driving it they only kicked in at 4000rpm. Even then, when they did kick in, it felt a bit weak. So my question is: Is one of the turbos blown, and they are in fact working sequentially, only the first turbo isn't doing anything? AND, does anyone know of any people in the Perth area that are capable to do an inspection on the car and give me a reliable answer (like a turbo vehicle specialized inspection group)?

    Thanks heaps

it is tru the 2jz-gte engines can be modified to have the turbochargers modified to work in parallel, and on stock boost they do kick later and really arent that impressive behind an automatic transmission..

there is no "turbo vehicle" examiners, tho if you wish to have a pre purchase inspection i can do it for you, but you will find if you want shaft play examined, it would have to be authorised with the seller, for me to pull all the intake pipes off and inspect the turbos (which is a pritty time consuming job) which of course would have to be paid for seperately..

what you need to find is another vehicle that is set up parallel, and compare the 2..

log onto jzs147 forum , lots of other guys cars to compare with and too.

most performance car shops can perform an inspection , maybe try somewhere that deals in imports , eg wtf auto / c-red are great with toyota's , there a few nor too .

its not expensive to replace the turbos setup .. just labor intensive
turbos can be had for 200-400 a set but its a full day job

hopefully u can get it sorted and welcome to the 2jz goodness !!

    Thanks everyone for your help

    @mxracer92
Yeah I ended up booking it in with C-red (got referred to them by a friend and then saw you had given me the same advice ) They are doing a full 100 point safety check and checking the turbos (compression test, etc). In the worst case scenario that the turbos are stuffed, do you know where I can pick up some replacements? A link would be great

    Thanks again everyone

Yeah, thats what I figured, better to spend $440 and find out its stuffed then to spend thousands on the car and find out its got major issues

If you dont mind me asking whats the car youre looking at ? Theyd be a good chance id of sold parts to the owner or have worked on the car one time or other,

Goodluck hopefully the check comes up trumps.

Haha well I would love to get one of my own soon, so hopefully it does well in the inspection

It's a 1992 aristo, 2jz-gte, pearl white in colour, everything is stock (or so I have been told, and it did appear so...)

I would provide a link but the ad has been taken down since we agreed on a price : (
