A common topic. Hopefully I can provide some info for those who don't know, and that others can fill in the blanks for me.
Please note I am yet to do this, hence the questiojns. please tell me if anything is wrong and also fill in any blanks.
Fitting a later model Hilux LSD centre into an early Hilux diff.
1. Different carrier bearings required for late centre in early diff - Timken part number is #32010-X for these bearings. Depending on fitment, may require the tiniest bit of filing/sanding in some cases.
2. Two types of R&Ps. Early ones have a wider pinion bearing and shorter pinion head, later ones have a thinner pinion bearing and wider pinion head. If you are changing from an early to a late you need to use the factory bearings for the GEARS you are using, irrespective of the housing it is going into.
I think I'm fairly clear on all that.
What I'm NOT following is that I think some late model diffs were 30sp not 27sp. Can anyone shed some light on this? Apparently this change happened mid-late 90s... is that when Toyota started using the A & B designation on their axles?
Do you use the older side gears (to retain the old spline) with the new centre? Or do you just avoid getting a 30sp centre entirely?

I have never seen a 27 spline diff in the rear of a Hilux although I do have one in the front of my IFS Hilux 4x4 which has a F series in the front
Jealousy is a curse
Very interesting, that might shed some light. I'll do some more research tonight.

I have a 1986 yn57 4x2 cab chassis that i have just finnished a 2jzge conversion, drives brilliant but does need a different diff ratio for highway cruising, i am not interested in a lsd but have been told that a
2006 model 4 cylinder diesel or v6 will do the job at 3.5:1 . ......
If this is correct and anyone knows for sure let me know as i will change it asap.
Thanks in advance. drew.
Get an LSD.
Wish I had a F#%ken awesome toyota.. saving for the goodness now.... stay tuned....
All G series 8" (what all 2WD Hiluxes have) diffs are 30 spline axles. Where you are getting confused is that F series 7.5" diffs (these are the 27 spline ones) are what they use in the front of Hilux 4WDs, so they would also be listed as Hilux LSDs.
If this is for the RN16 (RN25 diffs are the same), you are going to have fun getting a late LSD/spool fitted or even a decent ratio (your current one would be 4.875:1) without changing the whole carrier/centre. As you have already researched new bearings and a spacer to correct the crownwheel offset are most likely needed.
coronaowner yes a 3.5 ratio would be much better for highway speeds btw.. you kinda got overlooked there champ haha
Yeah I made the mistake of using a 4WD site for my research.... lots of info but that also caused me to get wires crossed between F and G series... I neveer really think of "F" series as a "hilux diff" when obviously they're quire common.
