If not, then you just need to have a good enough flow rate to take care of 80% of your engine's fuel sucking capabilities at full noise. The other 20% is where the surge tank comes in (because you don't drive at full noise constantly)
The setup in my old RA28 was like that. For normal driving and drag racing it is fine as the surge tank acts like a buffer but during circuit work, the surge tank was empty after 6 laps and the engine stopped.

You may be surprised how much fuel an 18RG is capable of digesting once a turbo is cramming air down it's throat. I would always upspec the pump. If you don't use the fuel it will just be returned to the tank or surge tank. If you can't deliver the fuel that the engine wants, then you risk breaking something.

    Hi,

Went out and checked my engine on the weekend.

It is all but complete. Can't wait to get it into Trini.

It also has a cute lil rotary aircon pump and bracket. Damned if I know who's it is..... getting old is playing havoc with my memory. Anyway.. it's on the engine and therefore it's mine now!

That must have been a weanie lift pump Anthony? I only use the stock 185 intank pump as my lift pump but my fuel circuit does run back to the surge tank i guess?

You can get away with a much smaller lift pump than you would expect as it's not pumping under load like the pressure side of the fuel circuit....free flow rates are very high compared to a pump trying to maintain 60psi. A surge tank is a good option.

Dunno why you 28 boys don't just use an in tank pump (bosch 910) with a slightly modded tank...easy.

Easier in a 23 which has a taller tank that is less prone to surge actually...

Yeah a 23 is piss easy. I just did a gravity fed surge tank under the main tank....simple, foolproof and effective.

An anti surge 28 tank wouldn't be that hard though and dealing with the one pump is alot easier if you can get away with it.

Would you need to split the tank to do the anti-surge??

It would be easier to weld a 'well' onto the existing tank.

You could do an internal setup that would lower in with the in tank pump. A gated enclosure around the pump would be easy enough with the return line also feeding the well.

Getting the gates sized correctly would take a little experimentation but could do all that before install so no dramas there.

Justin, the standard pump in your 185 will happily flow 200kw of fuel all day. The lift pump in the gold car was a simple fascet type pump as is common in a lot of early carby fed cars. It was probably only good for 150 flywheel horsehower. Which is fine for a carby fed 18RG and fine for a 1G when cruising about but it couldn't flow enough to keep the 1g happy pushing a continuous 150rwkw on a track.

That was my point really, if you only want to cruise around town plus the occasional drag race or dyno run, a low spec lift pump is OK but don't expect too much out of it in a circuit environment where you are feeding a lot of fuel to the engine continuously.

The 28 tank is quite long and wide but only about 4-5 inches high. It's almost guaranteed to surge on anything less than 1/3 full. The 23 tank is much better in this regard. Definitly baffeling the 28 tank is a good idea regardless of wether you use an in tank pump or a surge tank.

Actually, another point that hasn't been addressed yet. Given that the 28 tank is so prone to surge, would it be better to stick with a fascet type pump that won't shit itself when it sucks dry? I heard that the axial flow pumps need the fuel to lubricate them and don't last too long if you run them dry.

But who would use a facet on anything with some grunt?

Many ways to skin the 28 tank, so i can't see what all the drama is about?

The car came with fuel setup already done. It was only lacking on a racetrack so until then I didn't see a need to change it.

Personally, I am running a pair of Pierburg axial pumps, one is a lift pump, the other is a pressure pump. I don't intend to run my car below half in any situation other than highway cruising (ie distance trips), so no issue there, and both pumps should out flow the engine's thirst during any possible situations, so aside from running the car around a long corner, I should be all good. My surge tank turned up today, it is about 785ml volume, so not too big, but hopefully that shouldn't matter too much with my setup.

Hi All (Gidday Justen Kev blue 23 here)

After over 20 years of ownership and still my first car, I'm finally giving my 23 the upgrade it deserves. Brakes, suspension, repaint, general tart up and Turbo the RG.

I've read this thread but after some info from the guru's here.

The sort of power I'm after is a bit of a torque monster style, Justen would know about this. Not necesaryily after big horses but no/low lag, plenty of low down torque and would be happy with the 250HP (too much?) type of limit that a lots of components of the RG will cope with out of the box.

Bit of info on my current set up. Originally 18RGU with 88253 head. Rebuilt (a couple of times after being stolen and trashed) with EFI, 10 ish CR pistons, stock cams. The EFI is an ancient Haltech F7 which works great BTW, full electronic dizzy.

I will be rebuilding my RG as the last build was quick and cheap. I would like to use oversized 9.6 pistons and reasonable boost, if you reckon the 8.6's are a better option then cool but would like it to have good off boost.

    A few Q's
What is the latest and greatest for turbos, GT25/28 BB something?
    What pistons are the go?
Will the EFI with e-dizzy be OK for a while and go phase 2 on that?

Thanks will start a threat when I have the bits together and no doubt will have more dumb questions if I can't find it in the archives.

    Kev
