Well, well our company has a captive machine shop with 3CNC lathes and one turning center with live tooling. Shoot me the prints and I'll talk to our machinist. If he can do it on our machines, it'll cost us materials and flip the guy some decent beer money and post to AU.

edit - actually I have 2 other shops that do a lot of work for us and are open to my "goverment jobs". If we can't do it in house, I'll get quotes from these guys and I know they'll cut me a break on price.

    Hey,

MnToyGuy, Do you guys use or have access to either Autodesk's Autocad or Inventor?? If so i can just shoot you the files that i came up with it all on.

You know MnToyGuy... after the Toymod's (and no doubt ClassicCelica.com) orders are finished... you will probably be able to make some fair "Beer money" on E-bay Keep your machinists happy for next time somebody on here comes up with a hairbrain scheme

I am in for a pump.

    Hey guys.

Ben, I can deal with DXF or DWG. We actually use CadKey, but I can get files converted if needed. I feel confident, but we'll see, it's the unforseen stuff that bites ya in the ass.

Yeah, I could make some $$ off this and a lot of other stuff, but bottom line we need to support each other. I'd probably keep an extra set or 2 to ebay and give some $$ to my machinist. Maybe a set to bring the wife out to dinner.

The cool thing is that we'd be making "convert your 18RC oil pump to TRD 18RG" kit. Just the deal us lepers with 18RG's have been waiting for, along with a source for guides/slippers re surfacing (which BTW I am working on ever so slowly).

Let's keep our fingers crossed! We'll need to dial in on some tolerances on the geometry, which I'll need your guys help on. I guaged mine today and it was 0.05 mm gap between lobe and land on a used pump! Pretty freakin tight! Have a great night, I'm outta here!

Good stuff. I am interested in 1 or 2 pumps as well.
BTW: has anyone measured the hardness on internal or external gear?
How did you work out the geometry?

I know there will be a lot of interest, but let's just see what I can do (and what it might cost) before we start taking orders, LOL.

I am away on business all next week, so unless I get drawings this week and work out tolerances, it will be later this month until I have answers.

I'm thinking having them (impellor and housing) made from SS or tool steel. Better to go a little hard than too soft. Based on the scratches on the flat ends on mine, it doesn't seem too hard as they would be from grit lodged between the housing and the parts.

Length tolerance shouldn't be too bad. If the fit tolerance is truly 0.05 mm or tighter, it may be a challenge.

Can someone scan the oil pump inspection page from the Green Bible and post it? Mine is at the engine builder's right now.

The shaft should be a piece of cake and I know he could do that on our CNC lathe. The spacer would be easy as it's not tightly toleranced, except per chance the thickness. It is ground on the flat surfaces, which means flatness, thickness or both are crucial. That's easy enough as I have access to grinding centers and someone who can show me how to use them.

Once I get the drawings, we'll figure from there.

    Hi,

Thing to be careful of with the shaft is that it is hollow. It has a small hole of only about 3 mm pretty much right down the guts of it and it also comes out at two places on the sides. I'm assuming this is to lubricate the gear at the top of the shaft as well as the shaft in the case too? I'll try and add that to the dwgs as well. MnToyGuy i've sent you a pm!

    This could get quite interesting.

    Hi,

sorry i've only got Autocad and Inventor. I'm happy to send them over though....

Also please note the drawings i have come up with may not be exact to the pump!!!! The measurements have only bee taken with the simplest of measuring devices not a high tech set of digital verniers etc When i can get my hands on a set i will be remeasuring!!

Having said that, is there a way we could use an actual pump and have it measured by a computer??? I know on ebay.uk there is the occasional new 18rc pump which would be great for the job.

I have not worked with inventor before, but you should be able to save the 3D model in STEP or IGES format (check the "save as" window).
Alternatively, you could save the 2D drawings in Autocad in DXF format.

Sorry for the complication, I haven't worked with Autocad for years (Pro-E & Solidworks lately).

    Hi,

ra23 - shoot me ur email and i'll send you the dxf. That should be all you need

I've just had a look at the main shaft of the pump. The is a hole that goes from the very bottom of the shaft to just above the impellor and another one about an inch above there on the side of the long shaft. That seems to be where that hole stops up the guts of the shaft. There is then another hole about 40 mm from the top of the shaft on its side that channels back into the guts of it to spit out the top, hence how it feeds oil to the drive gear from the pump drive shaft. That bit could be a little trickier but not very i would like to think.

The shaft should be easy. It diverts oil from one end to the OD of the narrower part to lube the shaft in th housing, back inside and out the other end. Holes aren't too deep so it's not likely a gun drill ($$).

As I said, I'm taking off on business, so I can't get to it until after the 21st. Keep our fingers crossed!

Ben, I got the drawing. My engineer is out this week, but maybe he can take a look next week when I'm out.

    Cheers,

    Eric

Getting a little excited my 18RGTE pistons have turned up. Compression is a little low but nothing more boost can't fix.
