Also with 180rwkw im wanting im thinking of swapping my w50 with a 55, is there any actual size difference or is it jus internals? my tunnel looks like it has quite a bit of room with the 50. im not going to be launching it so im not sure if i even need a 55, suggestions?

    Hi,

check out owens thread re putting in a w55 into an ra2X. They aren't just a straight forward swap. Not the most difficult of conversions though either.

Gumwah.... its actually a lot easier than reading Oman's thread.

    • Buy W55/W57/W58.
    • Attempt to get RT142 shifter position (the forward-most type)
    • Buy 21R/22R bellhousing and fork from RA60/RT142
    • Use the gearbox crossmember from your W50.

Actually... if you buy the whole W55 gearbox from an RT142 corona, its actually a bolt in affair (almost). Just be careful its not one of the RT142 coronas with a borg warner gearbox.

    METHOD:

    1. Remove W50 box
    2. Take gearbox crossmember from W50 and put on W55
    3. Bolt in W55 box
    4. You will find that the two front-most bolt holes on the gearbox crossmember now only line up with the rearmost holes in the chassis.
    5. Get two pieces of steel angle or flat bar, around 150mm long.
    6. drill them out and bolt in according to the diagram below

Check your current gearbox, as the RT132 *may* have the third bolt holes for the gearbox xmember (RA40 did, and they came with W50). If it does, the W55 from an RT142 is a direct bolt in affair. One final thing to check is your clutch slave cylinder. If you have the adjustable type, you will need to replace it with that of the RT142. If you have the non-adjustable one, then it is the same part, and everything is sweet. The clutch throwout bearing also changed at the same time as the clutch slave cylinder, but they should be replaced replaced, so use the RT142 (Or RA60, RA65) clutch parts.

Why would you want a W55 over a W58?? The W58 is virtually identical, with the exception of different gear ratios. Most notable is the very long overdrive for fifth.

Well I wasnt aware that 58's were identical to 55's so of corse i'd want a 58 if thats the case

On my RA28 i had the adjustable style clutch slave cylinder, and continued to use it by cutting the rod to the correct length to suit the RT142 release fork.

You are right on the throw-out bearing tho. You'll need to get a new one (which is a good move anyway).

Yes, if your slave cylinder is adjustable and fairly new, it can be used... but generally they are old and ready to shag out. From experience I can say that losing your clutch in the middle of town and having to change out the slave cylinder on the side of the road with minimal tools at hand isn't pleasant.

I had a bit of work done on this 2 years ago to get it road worthy and the clutch slave cylinder was replaced, will I need to replace it again or will it be sweet? im unsure if its adjustable.

If it isn't adjustable, then you are set. If it is adjustable, you will need to remove the adjusting nuts off the rod and cut the rod to the required length (somebody with a non adjustable off their car should be able to measure for you). There were only 2 types made that I know of for the W series of box, and that appears to have revolved around developments in the clutch fork and throwout bearing, as they both changed at the same time as the slave cyl.
