Default Beams 6 speed box to GA61 XX

Has this been done? Obviously a new tailshaft will be needed, but will the shifter line up (or near enough to?) (it's 1g powered, so box would need an adaptor plate...)

I've always wanted a 6 speed, and they're not all that expensive anymore...

Get the j160 from the 1gfe is200, bolts right onto your 1g motor, intergrated bellhousing with the box.

Remember that the J160 isnt very strong though.
Itll be fine behind a 1G-GE, but a 1G-GTE would give it a hard time especially if you have a harsh clutch.

That is true, hence why I have a w58 now. That said Rod has a j160 behind his 192kw 1g and craig (ddeane) has one behind his 230rwkw 1g.

Now that being said, Craig is now onto his second one after the first got very noisy ;-)

What cars are they running them in (weight Is what I'm wondering)

Also: never realised they came behind the 1g, makes sense though. Any idea what they go for?

They came standard in local IS200s, Altezzas, NC MX-5s, RX-8s and S15 Silvias.

They work fine behind a standard turbo S15, so as long as you're not pumping out huge power and don't thrash the box, I'd say it'd be fine.

Hmmm, I'll have to keep my eyes open for one, a nice gearbox makes or breaks a car

    Gidday

I am still using the original 6 speed, but Adrian is correct it has got a whine - this was my fault for running it dry for a few Ks (long story and my fault). Apart from that it works a treat and has not got any worse. I do treat the car fairly harshly.

As for the strenght of the box there is quite a bit of infor on the net. They did/do have some problems with them on S15s. This appears to be related to the circlip on 3rd gear slipping off and letting 3rd get loose with related damage. This only seems to be a problem with modified engines. The fix seems to be deepening the grove that the retaining circlip goes into. This is a simple and fairly easy procedure and would not be that expensive if the box was out. From what I can determine it does solve the problem. I know that Rod Try has also researched this and he may have additional info.

Now while these boxes do come in a number of vehicles, as stated by ill-minded, the ratios do differ which may or may not be a problem depending on your intended use. Also the boxes have an integrated bell housing and as a result only the box from a IS200 mated to the 1GF actually is a bolt up for your application. I cannot give any specific advice regarding fitting into a GA61 but do suggest that you have a search on this forum for a threat in which I set out the requirements for fitting to a RA23. I would suggest the only issue would be clearance for the starter bulge but this can be fixed with a ball pane hammer and the need to fabricate a g/box xmember.

As for cost they seem to vary from $400 odd up. There was a time when all Toyota (lexus) dealers seemed to have new ones sitting in their yard that had been taken out of new cars where the owners had complained that the detent for reverse was not strong enough so they replaced them with a brand new box with a stronger spring (or so I understand).

Awesome info, rep for you! (and others) when I'm near a computer again.

Has anyone done a length from the bolt face at motor to the centre of the shifter? Also heard that there are multiple shifter positions...

'Tis in the car but I am sure someone can give you the measurement. In my 23 the lever sits some 200mm back from the original position. To put that into perspective some 100mm back from the supra gearbox (58) that I took out of the ga70. I understand that you can change the linkage to move the lever forward some 50mm.
