thanks mate, i'll look into it.
but is it a fair statement to say that to get good driveability and around 160-180hp at the fly the motor require many major modifications?
45aken, buy and read 4 stroke performance tuning by A. Graeme Bell, it will give you a really good idea on so many things. i have it and it is a great book.
only cost about 50 bucks

160 at the fly i reckon you would get easily with some mild cams, quads aftermarket management and a few other bits and pieces, its "only" another 30 hp than a smallport.
you have read bills page on this subject haven;t you?
160hp at the flywheel shouldn't ba hard at all, thats only 100hp per liter, only about 120kw.
How much does the 20v have ? (iam not a 4age expert obviously).
160 at the fly is easy with a stock bottom end. I had about 160 at the fly ages ago with just 288* cams and a smallport engine. Very little else was done to the car at that stage.

what do you have at the fly now?
how did you get there?

just curious as to how much of this information would transfer across to the 20v's with the VVT in operation? as i'm considering looking into some cams and ecu options in the coming year.

How about getting a small port head.
Ty
SP head wont do anything for you. Not significantly anyway.
Ill detail some of the things i have done later after WoW time.

It may not do much for peak power but the power curve will be better due to higher port velocity.
Lifespan will be good, as long as its regularly serviced & not flogged continuously, Id expect it to last as long as a non-modded engine; afterall its essentially been rebuilt so its like a new motor, if nothing else it'll be in better nick than it was.what would the life be on an engine like this?
and when using the cams, would a set of after market valve springs be a good choice?
dry sump?![]()
aftermarket valve springs are definatley the go when upgrading your cams. your extra power comes from your increased lift as much as it does from the increased duration.et of TRD or the like are a good investment and easy to get hold of.
Dry sumping is getting very serious indeed! big $$$ and not really neccesary unless its gonna be fully blown race motor; although nice peice of mind

Just a thought, but don't the blacktop/silvertop 20V have 170odd HP at the flywheel to start with? Seems an easy option. Add headers and nice intake to that and you're laughing...

toyota fudged the figures for the 20v's to my knowledge. I believe when they produced that power it was running no accessories off the engine. Whilst the 20v does make marginally more power on paper than the 16v's its moreso the delivery throughout the rev range that makes them seem like a more powerful engine. well thats at least the way that i have found it since putting one in my car.
then again there are a lot more modified 16's out there than 20's so there is a larger knowledge base for them.

forget about the 20 valve.
what kind of lift would i be looking for with around a 288deg cam?
