8 - 8.5mm seems to what most aftermarket cams have around the 288 mark, although some are close to 9mm lift. with a set of trd valve springs 8.5mm of lift is sweet as. I even remember reading somewhere on here a while back, off-roader guys were saying they run over 9mm of lift with no probs at all flicking out shims.
288 is your limit without quads too, not enough vacuum for the ecu (even aftermarkete) to sense effectively. Im going for some 272's with trd valve springs & a mildly ported & shaved head, with 0.8mm metal trd h/gasket.
