Default 1JZ single turbo conversion tips

    G'day

At the moment I have everything ready for a Garrett GT35r to replace my twins. I need some tips before I dive in this sat.
What size restrictor do I need? Or Garrett has a built in restrictor?
Which oil supply hole best to use? Front or back?
I think my oil drain us bit small, about under 10mm diameter, will it suffice?

    All helps are welcome
    Cheers

Hey mate, what sort of oil feed line do you plan to use? A braided teflon hose? If so, Motorsport Connections sell restrictors to suit the Garrett BB turbos that slip in to the hose end. Without this I had a little bit of oil finding its way into the exhaust under certain conditions with a GT3076. Talk to your turbo supplier to be 100% sure in your application though.

Much of a muchness as to which oil feed hole you use, depends on which has the neatest path for the hose to run to the turbo I guess.

10mm is a bit small for the oil drain, aim for 16mm (5/8", dash-10) or bigger.

    Cheers

I ran my 2J originally with no restrictor in a -4 teflon feed line to a GT3582r which apparently has an internal restrictor. There was a little oil smoke at high rpm with no restrictor. My turbo uses a -4 to tapered fitting straight into the turbo, and I simply fitted a 0.8mm restrictor that slips into the AN end of the adapter and then the 90deg hose-end screws on after that. No more smoking at any revs after the restrictor fitment.

I'm running a -10 oil drain line with no issues.

Here's a pic of my feed line where you can just see the fittings:

I bought a oil and water kit from ebay, quality might not be that great but it works and cheap also has a restrictor in the kit, mine I think is a 0.8mm.

I used the front oil feed, closer to turbo and easier to reach when the manifold and turbo is on. Either one will work, depends on how you want to set it up.

You could buy the parts yourself and make your own kit. Have a look on GCG website for parts and kits.

Have a look at Bananaman members ride when he did his single, even though his turbo doesn't have water cooling, it helped me out when I did my swap as well from some other member's engine bay shots (JP being one of them).

    Good luck removing the twins.

Thanks all . I got the line kit from eBay!
Oil feed, waters lines all braided and fittings were well made, looks the good except the oil drain is tiny. :$

Can anyone tell me which is water inlet and water outlet on the engine? And does it matter which water in/out on the gt35?

From the pics I've seen from other people's setup, the water hole facing the engine is out and the other side is in.

    JP's photo above shows it

Direction of flow through the turbo does not matter at all, just plumb it whichever way runs the hoses most neatly.

Water fittings on the cast alloy outlet from the head to the top radiator tank is the feed, and the fittings that run into the back of the water pump are return.

Got the turbo installed, taken me 1.5 days. Thanks you all for the tips!
It is almost ready, needed to modify the wastegate bracket to line up perfect and shorten the oil drain line.

What do you do with the pipe from the iscv? It was going to the old stock bov.

you can either run a new hose with a small filter off to the passenger strut tower area, or run a new line from the original ISCV hard line at the back of the head to the new turbo intake pipe.

If you're going to run a line to the intake pipe, then I'd recommend using a metal hard-line past the turbo section, otherwise you may end up melting the hose.

    Woohooo it is alive.
    Can stock 1jz injectors handle gt35 14psi?
My old steeple wheels twin pushing 18-20psi on stock injectors and fuel pump. Can I push the Garret 35 to 1bar?

the standard injectors are good to around 270kw's, if you want above this there is either 2j 440's or 550's, being a 15 % and 45 % improvement in flow. then there's aftermarket...

what are you doing with your twins? as, if they are in good condition then they are in demand.

    Ah cool

    Front turbo is no good!
I'm going to chuck it on a dyno, making sure the AFR is fine.
Any recommended place around Liverpool Sydney?
