If you can weld a farm gate you can weld a crossmember to make the 18R-G fit. I've seen it done, just not pretty. A nicer conversion is to use a 2T-G motor and T50 gearbox. It will be lighter and fit better , and the car should handle better. Use the 3T bottom end. With the right parts it would be close to 2 litre.
But if you can use any Toyota 4 cylinder, and you are racing, then you would be better off using a more modern 16v engine.
Even a stock 4A-GE 20v maybe better value than a built 18R-G.
