check out the xJZ rolla wagon build thread.....
Afternoon oh wise and mighty members of toymods..
I have recently come to a decision that has halted any further accumulation of 4AG parts, and have started to begin to sell unneeded parts. This is all making way for my next project.
I have a 1984 AE71 spirit, that i had a 4agte sat aside for until 2 weeks ago when i put it in my daily.. now the daily already had a 4agze in it and at the time i was just going to rebuild it up to top noch spec for a pretty hot streeter/track beater e7.
Thinking about it now, im starting to get a bit bored/lack of interest with 4clyinders.. and thinking logically a 2jzgtte will make more power in stock form than a fairly worked 4agte, also taking note that the stock engine will be much more reliable, and with simple bolt on mods and some wiring will have all the power i could possibly need right there with a stock block.
So i have my heart set on doing this now, i know it will require some extensive modification but im up to the challenge.
Question is what parts should i start keeping my eye out for exuding the parts i get from a halfcut? And what will require fabrication? (so i can start gathering materials)
cheers,
Casey

Firstly, do you want this conversion to be road legal as there are restrictions as to how big a motor you can put into a car based on its weight. As these differ from state to state, its best to do a little research or wait for someone to pitch in about your state (I know about the rules for NSW and in much larger cars to begin with so not really relevant).
Secondly, what do you want to achieve from the car as such a large engine up front will make going around corners quickly somewhat challenging. And are you looking at doing the whole lot at once or in stages?
As for the conversion, I would start by looking through 1JZ-Rolla's wagon thead and take some basic measurements or your car to see how well it will fit, including the intercooler, clearance to bonnet, and around the turbo area as it tends to intrude into the brake booster/clutch master area plus the dumps and steering shaft wanting to share a similar space.
While I have read through your threads and not sure on what the AE71 is already sporting, you should look first at getting the rest of the car up to scratch suspension and brake wise since you wouldnt need to be changing these for the conversion.
Then you will need to decide on what you are running on your particular car and what will be required to make these work, such as power steering, AC, auto/manual and actual gearbox.
Lastly, will be looking at what needs to be modified to make it fit as not much stock items will be able to be used. The plus side of this is that you can sell off more of the halfcut to recoup some costs or just go for an engine/gearbox/ecu package. These would include mounts (gearbox and engine), sumps (remember, there are 3 available for the JZ motor - front, mid, and rear and they are all interchangable, although the mid one is much rarer than the others), trans tunnel, tailshaft and possibly a diff upgrade at the same time to save redoing the tailshaft, exhaust, and also lets not forget wiring.
Certainly looks like an interesting build and look forward to seeing some progress on it.
I'm with Cuzzo on this, it will cost you an exorbitant amount of money, then there are the issues of engineering, and insurance.
Will help you brush up on your fab skills none the less
i think $15k is a pretty conservative estimate personally - there is a LOT of modification required to squeeze in a 2JZ.
...... butt scratcher?!
i thought this was going to be a track hack casey? if so then a big heavy iron block six up the front is kinda not what you want.. you can make anything work with enough money, the question is how much are you really willing to spend???
Shudders, SR20DET would make far more sense. Or if you are looking at more capacity, 3RZFE plus "T"

I will be doing a LOT of it myself. Really all the tunnel work and cross members and such aren't a drama, I will probably spend majority of my spare cash an savings on this car. I'm in victria an just of yet haven't read up on road legal "rules" it is still registered, and if it were possible I will pay out to have it engineered. if not however I will consider handing the plates in. I'm sorry this is a very brief reply I'm still at work and don't finish till midnight. I have a fair idea of what I'll need to buy/modify the sole perpose of this thread is to help me figure out my budget and what paths are the best way to go about it I.e halfcut or crate motor/box.
Thanks mate, Firstly yeah, i am not sure on the weight thing i will be looking this up shortly. how much weight difference is there between a 1j and a 2j (both twin turbs)?
I will probably be doing this in stages, just so i can test/trial things that work and dont work. Things like brakes and shocks will have there due attention, i believe it only has corona brakes on it at the moment with kyb shortstroke shocks and King lows that were made for a bombadore fitted all round. Car is quite rigid but i will do every bush and upgrade the sway bars while im at it.
Apart from that i really dont know what diff is in it, from what i breifly read on the plating on the housing its 4.3 ratio and its a locked center.
Everything else is pretty much stock, i'd like to know exactly how close a 2J would come to the brake and clutch master area, i know they will be upgraded but it'd be good to know how much room i have to play with.
Is it honestly worth getting a manual halfcut or a crate engine/box?
Cheers, and i also thought 15k was a bit on the tightarse side of things
Im gonna be pretty dedicated to this car, nothing will be done half assed. i will focus on brakes and suspension components as much as i have done with the hatch and seca in the past.
nah im over 4 cylinders man, and SR20's make me spew.
why not buy a JZA80. would make for a faster track car anyway?
and that KE70 is too nice to mangle the chassis. buy a shitter and sell me that one![]()
Word.
Kinda silly doing E70 2JZ swap, unless you're Scott Hoffman and a mad **** lolz.
Just buy a JZA70 or the likes.

if a dedicated track car, how far back into the cabin are you prepared to move the engine?![]()

Physically how much bigger is a 2j to a 1j?
Reading up and doing the math it may be more worth while to go a 1j.
and no to JZ70-80xox
sweeping generalization: a 2J is a slightly taller 1J and has more power/torque - but for this project, think of them as the same motor.
Unless you bring the motor well into the cabin, it will be a lead tipped arrow. However, 1JZ-Rolla's wagon was impressive at the National's motorkhana so with the right development, you could sort out most of hte resulting handling issues.
