if you have an issue with tyre size i would suggest you look into using a different motor/box - the 2zz setup you pay a premium for.

one setup that is very much overlooked is the camry 2az setup - easy to get hold of, torquey motor & cheap to buy!!

the gearboxs come out in a number of different variants with different ratios - since you want to rear mount it, you get a sw20 mr2 gearbox that has the gear linkages in the right place. early jap cars run a 4.1 diff. (failing that you fit a celica diff/internals)

there is also now a 6 speed variant of that box (but it's expensive)

    just my $0.02 worth!

Thanks T. I appreciate any advice I can get. The main goal of the project is a cheap to maintain, cheap to run wheelchair accessible vehicle. The second objective is to make it as compact and sporting as possible. The third is to make it look attractive. I was looking at the Camry engine. What are their running costs like compared to the Corolla?

    hi scott,

cheap to buy, easy to get parts for. i think new crate motors are around $2500!

typical toyota reliability - do 100k with very minor maintenance. get them serviced anywhere.

wiring diagrams etc easily available for your conversion. stat. written off 2006+ camry would be obtainable for around $4k at the auctions (how much have you been quoted for a 2zz conversion??!!

for a car around 600-800kg, that is not supposed to be an out-&-out racer they would be the motor of choice - & if you are keen you could add a supercharger later - inlet manifold is plastic on these motors!!! easy to chop it up for templates!

    Hi T,

I've been quoted approximately $70,000 to build the prototype then individual vehicles will be approximately $50,000. The extra cost for the first model will be because we need to create molds and jigs, as well as the unforeseen extras.

A standard Corolla or Camry is more of a racer than an industrial van. I'm not looking at building something that will win any track day. Just something that is enjoyable to drive.

    mobrod,

click link on my post above & see what i do for a living - i know exactly how much work what you are looking at building will be!!!

i used to work for meridian motorsport - they were the agent for the birkin clubman so i had lots of involvement with that sort of vehicle!

think your initial build cost a bit light - assuming labor cost not included!!

    Hi T,

Thanks for the advice. I know it sounds as though it should cost more. Luckily some parts have already been donated and the engineer/builder will be modifying chassis they already build. It will not be a complete redesign. Most of the labor will also be at a reduced rate.
