Does the carby have an anti dieseling solenoid?
Hi I've recently bought an xt130 corona has 130,000kms on it, the car starts easily but it will run for a few minutes, with intermittent drops in revs to the point where it is about to stall, then it will just cut out altogether, we've set the gap to 20thou (not sure if this is correct, my dad said it sounds about right) checked the plugs and replaced the fuel filter, does anyone have any suggestions as to what we should check next? I know these motors are widely hated by people but I'd prefer to get it running for a while so i can find something decent to look at swapping in.
Does the carby have an anti dieseling solenoid?

I dont really know mate, this is the first car I've owned that isnt EFI so its kind of all new to me, I've ordered a workshop manual but it hasnt arrived so i dont really have much to go off, theres no wires connecting to the carby anywhere though if that helps? infact im pretty sure the only vacuum line that runs to the carby controls this diaphragm that returns the butterflies to closed when the car is at idle - I think.
No wires to the carby would suggest that it doesnt have a solenoid. (either that or the wire is missing lol).
Start it up and pump the throttle, see if it stays running. Alternatively dribble fuel into the top while its running to see if it stays running. (which would indicate a fuel issue).
Which gap did you set to 20 thou? spark plug? points?
Take a picture of the engine/carby dood.

set the points to 20thou, spark plugs seem to be set right and not gunked up with shit theyre slightly wider than my fingernail, ill take some pics and post them up, thanks for the help so far mate
sorry these pics are huge i dont know how to resize them, and after taking the air filter off it looks like there is that one red wire which runs to the back of the carby

um yer its the best the iphone can do sorry, i dont have a digital camera
these pics are much better than the original one i saw.
That red wire looks like it runs to the knobby thing on the side? Which i am guessing is the auto choke.
i would try dribbling fuel down the carby to see if it stays running first.

yer i posted one pic up to check id posted the right photobucket link, then i uploaded the rest the first pic was rubbish, yer the red wire runs to that metal thing thats connected to the back of the carby, ill try that fuel thing in the morning, thanks for the help mate ill post the results of dribbling the fuel into the carby tomorrow
Have you investigated any solutions on the Holden forums? The 1X/Starfire is a Holden red six with two cylinders lopped off, so there could be some common traits/problems between the two.

yer mate i actually scanned a few holden forums as well as a torana owner forum, seems like most people had just ripped the 1x out as there were really no posts relating to it
The red wire would be going to the automatic choke. The revs would be dropping in stages as the choke shuts off in stages. You could turn your idle speed screw up so it idles when warmed up. It could have a vacum leak some where so try spraying something like CRC along where the manifold bolts up to the head and around the base of the carby to see if the revs pick up. It might also need to have the idle mixture adjusted. There should be an idle mixture screw at the base of the carby near the rocker cover. Set the points at 17 to19 Thou and spark plugs at 40 thou. Timing should be around 6deg.
thanks for that dazza ill definently have a look at all that tomorrow, we tried messing around with the idle speed screw but it doesnt really seem to pick the revs up much if at all, im assuming thats the screw at the front of the carby that you can see in the first pic i uploaded - near the 2 arms that are cable tied together.
I just had another look at that first pic and i would say that it does show your idle speed screw. It should have some sort of clip on the rod that connects it to the arm so it pivots and opens the throttle slightly to increase your idle speed. I think the cable tie will be letting the rod slip so you cant adjust your idle speed.
