Obvious Q, why do you think it needs a rebuild ??
HI All.
So I went and bought myself a 1989 22r dual cab hilux 2wd.
Turned out to be a bit of a lemon, however it has a good gearbox with a brand new clutch and new radiator and hoses etc. The body is also in really good condition, no rust dents or scratches to be seen.
So my problem is the motor, and my question is:
How much would it cost to get a mechanic to rebuild the motor? I'm just after a ball park figure so that when i go speak to my mechanic I know what im in for.
Cheers for any help you can give me.
Adrian
Obvious Q, why do you think it needs a rebuild ??
It doesn't seem to run smoothly, it uses a heap more petrol than what others do and it has a load rattly when the engine is under any sort of load which ive been told is the timing chain.
*loud rattle
Rattling...
Timing - lols
thanks for your help...
Also called "pinging" can be called rattling caused by incorrect timing or low octane fuel![]()
What's the compression?
The timing chain doesn't care whether the engine is under a load or not, redline in 3rd gear going up a mountain or coasting down a mountain in 1st gear at redline, it is only affected by the crank's RPM not the load on the engine.
Pinging, pinking, spark knock, detonation, also names for the sound like marbles in a tin can or a small bell.
'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!
Using a lot of petrol could just be the mixture being too rich
Clockwise is leaner
BASIC setup as follows...
Get engine to operating temp
Screw in the mixture screw GENTLY until the engine starts to stutter
Back it off anti clockwise until it smooths out
Extra 1/4 turn and done
Get your mechanic to do a basic service 1st & tune up - May surprise you with +++KWs![]()
Sounds good, I'll give that a go. The pinging only happens when Im in gear in the middle of the rev range, At low or high revs it runs ok. If the car is just sitting there in neutral it doesnt make the pinging noise anywhere in the rev range.
These engines also do usually have a rattle, you could try also doing a valve clearance adjustment back up to the proper specs. Which may help the rattle. Even after doing this my old engine still used to rattle a little.
