Yep, LH bits are pretty common in metal turning shops. Used to work in one and snaffled a LH bit once to help me out of the shit with a snapped stud.....
This is going to amaze some people, you can buy left hand drill bits from specialist tool suppliers. The bits cost 3 times as much as a normal HSS drill. If you break a stud, centre punch the sucker, grab your electric or air operated drill set it on reverse, and drill into the stud. The cutting action can grab the centre of the stud and physically unsrew the stud for you.
cheers Chuck.

'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!
'z' ute: we tried left handed drill bits with a cordless, right handed and air drill. none of which worked, but alot of people can attest to that method working so by all means give it a whirl.
allencr: it was ground out using a very small cylinder shaped die grinder with a dome shaped end and a compressor. it only took half an hour to 45 minutes for him to get it out. the die grinder we had was huge it wouldnt fit in the stud hole without chewing the head up.
honestly i dont think i've spent a better $100 ever when it comes to problems. this is literally the first time i've been stumped on something that me and my mates couldnt overcome.
