Default ST204 vs ST185 vs ST165 Front Brakes

    Hello,

I have a question for the Celica experts - if I have front calipers marked ST204 (by the wrecker) but they are twin-piston, what do I really have? Were there any ST204s (maybe JDM?) which had twin-piston fronts? If not, do I actually have ST165/early 185 fronts or are there other twin-piston Celica fronts I don't know about?

Wish I could post pics but I'm in Canberra and I left the calipers in Sydney bugrit.

    Cheers,

ST 202 have twin piston too.
would be great to get some pics for us to tell, the ST204 brakes do have a different disc dimension in comparison with the st165/185 ones.

this is what an st202 caliper looks like

Thanks da-horse, I will try to get pics or at least a code off them or something. I'm pretty sure they don't have those ribs on the top though.

those may or may not be but that looks remarkable like my early model st185 twin piston items (similar/same as the st165 units)

Have confirmed they do have ridges and a hole in the middle of the top. They also say 40T28 AISIN on both sides and what looks like 3Y5 TOYOTA. So I guess I do have ST202 calipers...?

As far as I can determine, an ST202 rotor is 277x25mm, is that right?

I'm trying to use them on my AW11. I know the ST165/early 185 ones will bolt up but not sure if these ones are any use...if all that's required is redrilling some 277mm calipers for 4x100 I guess I'll do that, but if the ST202 calipers won't bolt up to my hub then it's back to the drawing board (having trouble finding ST165 ones).

Actually while I'm at it, if I fit bigger brakes it has occurred to me that my 14" spare will no longer fit over them. Does anyone reading this know where to get "spare in a can" inflation/sealant kits (pref in Canberra or online)?

fyi, those ST202/204 calipers were carried thru to the ST215W, but i'm not sure about the ST246W. and those ones pictured look liek the ST215W caliper also. i'll check the numbers tonight (iir )

ST215W have that written on caliper also. the toyota number is different, but that is probably just batch/date number

rotor (from rough measurement = 270-280mm.. forgot to check thickness

yeah 277mm 278mm by 25mm sounds pretty much right. whats the hub diameter of the rotor? the ST16x/ST18x ones are 54mm, the ST20x ones are 55mm..

oh and u can get those spare inflation cans at any autobarn, kmart etc.

    Hi Huy,

Can you measure the mounting holes on those brakes centre to centre because i am wondering how close they would be to fitting on an AE92. I suspect that they may be easier to get than the super strut ones.

    Thanks,

    Ty

Jeez this is a great forum! Thanks guys, now I'm optimistic that they'll work with ST185 rotors (278x25mm with 54mm centre), which shouldn't be too hard to find. If I could get them undrilled that'd be awesome, but don't like my chances.

As for whether they'll bolt up to my hubs, does anyone know whether the ST202/204/215W calipers have the same sized brackets as the ST185 ones? If they do I could be set....

Ty, the spacing between each mounting hole is 130mm. the brakes up the top came off a car with super struts, the ST202 SSIII i think. these arent the same brakes as the locally delivered ST204 from what i've checked. given i havent got access to a set of ST204 brakes i cant give you a definate answer.

ST202 and ST185 brakes are interchangeable as they both have the same hub mounting positions. however the brakes above have shorter hub centre to mounting hole lengths than ST185 ones.

give me a few days and i'll get some more measurments up. i need to get some study done...for once hehe

Maybe we could make up a list of all the bolt-up calliper conversions that people here have tried and tested?

As far as I know: ST185 callipers bolt up to AW11 front, SW20 rear callipers kind of bolt up to AW11 rear (using AW11 front rotors)

Thanks for measuring them for me. The AE92 measured at about 115 mm, i need to take them offf for an exact measure. I can't see that i would be far off and that is 15 mm diff with the ST's.
I have also wondered if the whole hub/arm of an ST would go onto the Ae92 and put the AE92 axle and hub into it, that way you may get the 278 discs and calipers.

It would be good to have all of this stuff in front of you to mix and match.

    Thanks,

    Ty

if you do manage to source some undrilled st185 rotors (278mm) then post em up as im trying to chase a set without much luck.

Yeah I have tried a bit too - talked to the engineer at Meridian in Melb and he said to make ST185 ones safe you'd wanna TIG weld the other 4 holes after redrilling...whatever it takes to make it legal I guess Should still be cheaper than a pair of DBAs even with the work!

da_horse - so what you're telling me is if I have the same calipers as in the pics they will mount on the hubs, but not with ST185 rotors? Only difference I can see is the centre bore is 54 on the ST185s. This is doing my head in
