Is it a FWD or RWD 4AGE? If it's FWD with a Mickey Mouse C52 gearbox, 7AFE and 20V starter motors should fit on the intake-side mounting (as opposed to the 4AGE exhaust-side), slightly easier to get to that way.
Hi guys
Starter motor is playing silly buggers. I have a brand new battery and sometimes I only get a 'click' when going to start the car. Rocking the car back & forth a few times allows me to start the car.
So, is this easily repaired, or am I better replacing it?
Should I get a second hand one, a reco unit, or a new one? Will other models fit (4AFE, 4AFC, 4AGZE, 100kw, 20v, 7AFE, etc) or does it need to be a 4AGE one?
Cheers

You'll find that most AE82s are front wheel drive
The starter motor at the front, under the extractors, and the gearbox is whatever comes factory in the Twin Cam.
Random pic-whoring opportunity
Starter is here under the extractors

My lack of sleep and coffee meant that I didn't see the AE82 in the titleOriginally Posted by Shifty
And if it's the stock Twinky gearbox, then it'll be a Mickey Mouse. Moving the starter to the intake side would obviously mean a little bit of wiring (not much), and a different end-plate (FE one, so the cutout is on the right side), but I don't think it needs any more work than that, and that way if you need to change it later on you don't need to remove the exhaust (and it doesn't suffer from heat-soak either)

I haven't played with FWDs for years; but on RWDs there's normally a bulge in the bellhousing that you bolt the starter to, so would I not need to change boxes?

That's a fair bit of mucking about. I wouldn't have thought the putting it on the intake side would make it much more accessible.
Funds permitting I would get a new reduction starter from repco.
See here the second post in the thread contains the part number.
Well worthwhile retrofitting a heat shield onto the starter, if the one you end up getting doesn't already have one.
Cam mountain I feel different from the ordinary
Not with the Mickey Mouse. The reason the C52 is called the Mickey Mouse is because it has two starter humps - one on each side of the block. The reason for this is the engine is shared between the 4AGE (exhaust side), 7AFE (intake side) and 20V (can't remember which)Originally Posted by Shifty
As long as you have the right end cover plate (which blanks off the un-used starter hump), you can run the starter on either side - 4AGE on the exhaust, 4/7AFE on the intake side

I'm more interested in moving it away from the hot exhaust, and also the opportunity to tidy up the wiring.Originally Posted by parrot
Actually out of interest I have already priced one from Repco, at $476.00 they can stick it fair up their clacker!Funds permitting I would get a new reduction starter from repco. See here the second post in the thread contains the part number.

Well there you go. 'Mickey mouse' is slang for something being flash or better and I took it that way, but now looking at the pic I can see why they call these particular boxes the Mickey MouseOriginally Posted by Hiro
Can you change over the end cover plate without removing the box? When I changed my starter on the 7AFE, I could do it from underneath the car without removing anything apart from the wires and two bolts, no need to remove anything like the exhaust. Can do it from above if you have long arms too, it takes a bit of manuevering either way (not sure how going from on top would go on a bigport though, but underneath should be just about the same)Originally Posted by parrot

So anyway if I get this backing plate thing, can I (a) just bang it on without removing the box and (b) can I just use a starter from any of the rear-mount 4A or 7A motors?Originally Posted by Hiro

You'd need to remove the box, it slots inbetween the bellhousing and the block, so it mightn't be worthwhile then if you don't want to remove the boxOriginally Posted by Shifty

remove gearbox to change starter? you guys are on crack
if it wasn't so bad, I'd actually do it when I do my clutch in a couple of months but I'm kinda stuck which is a shame

Well, to change your starter at the moment you're going to have to take the exhaust off......basically lose-lose, just a choice of how much you want to lose.Originally Posted by Shifty
