    ^^

unless of course you have extractors, which is a reason that these starter motors fail faster..

also do you have a relay already hooked up to the starter motor? that usually helps but is really a temporary solution

    Holy f#$%^n batshit!

That's a bit extreme. In rear drive format you can get this starter out without removing the exhaust manifold. But I wouldn't pay that much for the privilege.

So looks like it's off to the auto elec for a change over. Make sure you keep the heat shield as they don't all have one. Or down to the pickies which is what i would be doing, and where I found my repco item. You will probably find one there that has a reco sticker on it. Any car with a 4AC or 16 valve 4AG will fit.

They were referring to if he was to swap the starter to the other side, in which case he would need to remove the backing plate, and to do this = gearbox off.

FYI - Extractors still need to be unbolted and moved to get the starter out.

Can ayone confirm? That's what I was kinda asking at the start, before we went on the tangent.

Do I have to get one from a 4AGE or can it be a 4AC? Can it be a 4AFC or anything else? Nothing's ever fricken easy

I got a pice on a rebuild, $180-$330 depending on what it needs.

Oh and yes it has extractors, I can't forsee a problem removing it as there looks like plenty of clearance.

What kind & where of 'click', a little noise from some relay under the dash, or a loud 'thunk' from the starter solenoid? Clutch switch?
Jumped the stater by putting 12V to the solenoid's small terminal?
The solenoid may not operate from receiving too little current or from going bad & needing more current then the system can supply, and cleaning connections or adding a relay can cure this.
If the solenoid moves the starter drive but doesn't make enough contact to feed current to the stater motor, then cleaning/replacing its contacts should fix it.

Moving the car will never do anything for any starters electrical problem, only a mechanical problem of the starter drive jammed with the ring gear.

An AE92 will have a different plug. Starter looks aesthetically different but should bolt on.

    Ahh fuck really?

I pulled mine out and then when I went to put the new one it the plug was wrong, and it looked completely different, so I figured it was the wrong one and put the old one back in.

Does this mean the one I've got is actually ok, and I've gotta pull the carnt apart again to fit it?

Aside from looking externally different, which isn't an issue, the bolt spacing seems OK. My main concern is that the existing starter has a 'snout' on it over the engagement gear, and the new one doesn't. Can anyone comment on this?

A mate of mine owned this car for 10½ years and didn't ever replace/reco the starter motor... although it does have a reco sticker on it so there's a chance it was replaced with a different one?

I just had a look on my phone, and I didn't think to take a pic of the starters beside each other! I'll see what I can google................... ok I googled "4AGE starter motor" and it came up with this pic, which looks prettymuch like the starter that's on the car presently (note the snout on the end).

Has anyone got a picture of the "gear reduction starter" everyone seems to want? Maybe I ended up with one of those (would be unlike me to end up with something good by chance... normally I pay extra for something shit).

    Not what I found.

Just takes some wiggling and maneouvering and you can eventually get the starter out and in without unbolting extractors (on ae82 twincam) (you'd wanna make sure you dissconnect the battery first though )
