For the effort of having to replace a HG, I'd just be getting a new one. $62 isn't too bad at all.
just a quick question. i got quoted $62 for a new 22RE HG from toyota the other day is this a decent price or am i being ripped off. Also i only need the engine to last another 3 months so would i be able to use the HG off a spare 22RE i have laying around, It's still all intact but i'm not to sure about how well it would crush again.
cheers

I wouldnt advise reusing a headgaskit at all its just not worth it if it lets go. That seems like a fairly good price for a genuine one.
if it is only for 3 months (which i dobt cos things never seem to pan out like we hope).
why don't you go to supercrap and get a generic head gasket for a 22re somehting by Gasmiser or something.
surely for the standard bodge job repair, that would be cheaper.
Anything under $70 from toyota is a bargainOriginally Posted by chubbylover53
. In all honesty thats a fair price is not a bargain. Would reccomend you steer away from 2nd hand head gaskets, Exhaust and inlet are a different story, but head gasket = don't reuse

the ramifications of not having an income for two weeks, and having a supra, make themselves very evident, and hurt.
so, i understand where your coming from, but just remember, a little extra now, will save you later on.
it may be a bit much, but you wont feel it in a few weeks, and your car will thank you for it

I'd be getting a new one, if you use the old one and there is a bit of weakness or torn gasket around the water jackets your in trouble,
As Eldar said it'll save you time and money later on.

i've heard of blokes re-using hg's but why would you it'll just hurt your head and cost more later plus the fact that you would have a worry in the back of ya head about getting a blown hg while your out driving is just cause to buy a new one plus when it's time to get rid of it you can say it's just had a new hd
here 39 bucks for head,sump,intake/exhust gaskets

ya gotta love ebay
presuming a mechanic was to replace it, wat kind of cost would one be looking at? including all labour?
Mate, what symptoms are you experiencing? I was just thinking that if you’re only looking to get another 3 months out of the engine, I would try some Chemiweld or similar additive in the radiator. It could be enough to get you by for bugger all cost and effort for that matter. Even if you have to throw a bottle in a month to get you by the stuff is magic. Just a though.Originally Posted by chubbylover53

A mate of mine was quoted a neat gorilla for this job on a camira from an honest mechanic (there is such a thing, you just need to shop around a lot). DIY is a good thing on motors other than high performance, where the job should be done only by an experienced person. Also, especially with the 22RE (alloy head) you need to inspect for warpage, and may need a head shave (generally about $50-$70).
Phobia, from my experiences, quick fixes like these will find a way of not working properly and will be more expensive in the long run... so my suggestion would be to go for the new HG.

Yeah, It's just a bit of work for an engine that will only be in service for 3 months.![]()

As Barned01 said though, things never pan out as they are meant to, so it may end up another year in service.... which is not a good thing for a temporary fix which could clog other things in the system. and then the HG will be the easy option.
