Post ta22 with aw11 4agze: Electrical, gauges and general queries

    Hi Guys,

Appreciate any help you can provide to get some of the gauges etc working on my ta22. It has an aw11 4agze conversion and I’m itching to get it to a track day.

There’s a heap of things I need to sort out before I can take this for a drive, and this is before I look at brakes and suspension.

I had a look on the net and the forums. Found a few good reads but not all the answers I need. I also had a look at a standard ta22 which gave me a good look at the original wiring. I am an amateur with electrical work, best thing I did was wire up a stereo and a relay for a thermo fan and temp switch which was bought from Rocca Bro’s in the 1990’s

Ta22 Wiring diagram I looked at.
    http://khi-santh.canberracelica.org/files/ta22.pdf

    1. Tacho – Can I use the factory ta22 tacho with the 4agze? The three wires I can see that were connected to the coil are:
Black with red was connected to coil +
Black that was connected to coil –
Black with yellow that was connected to ballast resistor

Which combination do I need to make this work or should I look for an aftermarket gauge?

    2. Oil pressure – Can I use an aftermarket gauge with the factory aw11 4agze sensor?

Its going to be tough to fit a sensor on the exhaust side pf the block as the alternator bracket is making anything a tight fit. There is a fitting that is blanked out there and I could get a custom braided line from Enzed or similar and have a remote sensor setup. Is this the only factory sensor location?

I already have a factory sandwich setup between the filter which is connecting an oil cooler. Possible to drill into the top of this and get it threaded to fit an aftermarket oil pressure sensor?

Hmm could maybe get another sandwich plate for oil pressure and piggy back to the factory sensor. Not too sure about this, this could cause my filter to get mighty close to the extractors or even foul on them so probably not.

    3. Water temp – Might go aftermarket for a couple of reasons. Can I use an aftermarket gauge with the AW11 factory sensor?

I can’t find the yellow with thin green line wire that went to the standard ta22 water sensor. I know this came out of the loom section with the alternator wiring but not sure if this has been taped up. I saw a black (I think it was black with red??) wire with a single female plug near this section of loom and female plug with 6 potential wires but not sure what this is for. Will have to print the loom pdf to get a better look.

    4. Reverse lights – I cant see any wires connected to the t50 or anything under the car. Where do these two wires come from, from the engine bay or through the shifter hole? I got a feeling that these two wires were connected to a plug but were unplugged and now no idea where the wires come from. Any idea what colour they are? I can see a “back up light section” on the wiring diagram with red with light blue line so might try and find these.

    Cheers,

    Pete

    1. yes with the aw11 4agze it uses a single coil and is easy.. just put the tacho wire (black) on the -ve wire of the coil. the other ones you mention are +ve power for coil.

    2. best to fit the sender unit that is designed for the gauge. otherwise won't be accurate.

    3. same as above.

    4. there should be 2x wires going to the gearbox, usually pretty high up on one side.. red and blue usually are the colours.

Thanks, I will have a go at the tacho and see if I can find those reverse wires! Ok will look at aftermarket gauges and sensors. Interested in thoughts on the best mounting for a sensor for oil. Water temp will hopefully be ok, although the factory sensor looks pretty short.

You can fit an aftermarket oil pressure sensor into the original location.. thread for vdo, splitfire, autometer is the same..

you can use factory water temp or oil for that mater, but you will need to remove the original 2t engine sensors so they suit the factory gauges..

Hi, thanks for the help. I extended the black wire to the coil and now have a tacho!

The reverse wires, I cant find these. Any idea where they come from in the loom, do they come from a specific plug?

I'm going to use my existing Automoeter mechanical gauges for water temp and oil pressure to keep it cheap and simple and use what I've already got. Getting an adapter made up to let me fit the sensor to the water temp. Old man is a tool maker so this should be no issue.

The oil pressure is going to be a crap job as the factory sensor is snugly attached to the block under the alternator bracket. Will have to pull this out and potentially the extractors and inlet piping

Was thinking I could potential get the Toyota factory oil cooler sandwich plate modified to accept a sensor. Similar to this below, the little bolt with red washer. Thoughts?

I had to replace the 4a oil pressure sender with the 2t one also. Ur setup in rex's thread and its near identical to mine, and i didnt have to remove the inlet piping or extractors just the alternator and bracket. Doing this will only take you 30mins, it seems like the easier option

If the ta22 reverse light wires are the same as the 28 then I think there is a plug somewhere around the steering box area. I had to make up new wires when I put my w58 in and remember connecting them up there.

Yeah, the reverse wires go from the t50 up and join the main loom roughly below where the front suspension pillar is. On my 22 there is an individual plug for each of the two wires although they are grouped together. Let me know if you can't find them and I'll see if I can grab a photo for you.

Just crush the stinking thing into a cube and lob it over the fence into U-Pull-it.
