    Default How dogey? Camber ajustment

Hey so long time lerker, first time poster So I took my MR2 (aw11) down to get an alignment, not pleased with the amount of camber, I did a little thinking.

So I need a little more camber, ideally -1.5 front and -1 back. But my little useless stock camber nuts are maxed out and currently the font it sitting on neutral and the back is -0.5

So I came up with this, instead of having to get camber tops, which from what people have said messes stuff up without coilovers. Im not in any hurry to get coilovers (little bit pointless imo).

Sooooo, what I’m throwing up is to slot the top bolt mount. The distance between the two mounts is 60mm, so to get 1.5degs, a nice relationship of about 1.5mm , 2o = 2mm as well.

So once it’s slotted about 2mm and nice meaty washer equal thickness of the slotted material and strength is put on either side. Bolted up and taken to the alignment shop. Once dialled in, carefully drive home (or in my case to a mate with pro welding skills) weld up the washers.

Now I do not see any problem with this, safety wise, as people put coilovers on their struts all the time with questionable welds. And even if the washer weld does fail it still has a second mounting point. It will just be one of those things that will be included in the monthly checks.

That's pretty much how a lot of coilovers do it without using adjustable strut tops (One set of coilovers I have are exactly like that, the TRD ones however need the adjustable strut tops).

Do it properly (ie, not by reaming it out with a drill bit...) and it should be fine. I would mark it out (2mm should do it) and carefully file it out with a circular file.

You should be able to get alot more camber with the eccentric washers on a aw11 then what you have posted. Jump into the aw11 thread.

Toyota make "crash bolts" that are used for re-alignment of camber after the strut towers have moved from a prang.
The are similar to the normal strut bolts but have a thinner section so you can move the strut around to gain more camber before tightening.

I bought a set for my GT4 a few weeks ago from Toyota spares for ~$8ea.

It was from some one who bought camber tops without coilovers (front) and raised his suspension, don’t really feel like experimenting with $180.

I took it to the shop and they said it was maxed, they didn’t believe me at first that it had adjustable camber, so they might have just been trying to get me out of there. I will have a look next weekend to truly see if they are maxed out.

With the crash bolts in question, I was under the assumption that they were of smaller diameter?

Note: just poped my head under and felt where the ajuster was.... It was facing the 'top' in the more camber range, not happy, jax quick fit...

with the eccentric washer system, a lot of wheel/tyre places dont know how to adjust it, so it's quite likely that they didnt even adjust the camber at all.

edit; just read what you posted. told you so take it to a proper shop, preferably one that is known to set up mr2s. and if you dont, then explain the eccentric washer setup to them and ask for a readout at the end

Yes. Majority of alignment shops have absolutly no clue how the eccentric system works. Your best learning how it works yourself and explaining it to them or Taking it elsewhere. There is plenty of camber available on stock struts

u can buy (from pedders i think) "adjustable" camber bolts that replace 1 of the 2 that hold the strut to the hub, and they have a lobe on them like a camshaft, use this to dial in a bit more camber. not an ideal solution but we bought them for a mates sw20 and it seemed to do the job.

    think they were around $70/pair
