whats wrong with using a sandwhich plate and using an external oil cooler, and using bigger thermo fans?...

or just thermo fans to begin with cos i HIGHLY doubt your having oil temp problems

pandaah - I don't have oil temp problems, because I have an empty engine bay
As the 88kw aw11 mr2 had a factory oil cooler, and I'm fitting a 120kw blacktop in, I want to play safe and fit an oil cooler of some sort. With the engine in the back, cool air is limited, so I'm checking out / asking about options for water cooling.

Having decided not to use the factory setup as explained above, tonight I removed all the cooling hoses and heat exchangers from the engine bay. The engine will go in without a cooler for now, because I want it back on the road ASAP, but I will def. be fitting something, probably a sandwich plate with thermostat and external water cooler.

Having said all that, I'm open to suggestions.

what i would do, is fit a mini radiator with a thermo fan to it if your really worried... i wouldnt bother plumbing it up how it was (if your in the modifing mood), as whats the point, its not cooling anything....

sorta like a heater core with a fan blowing directly on it?... makes more sense to me than having 80degree + oil running thru it..

I need a working 4AGE bottom end. Pref smallport GZE, but all others considered. Also complete motors.
Drift Volvo. Was fun. 2JZ next time.

the v6 benz motors have a huge exchanger (20cm * 10 * 10 roughly)bolted to the side of the oil filter housing - I dont think it could be utilised in this case though as they use a filter cartridge.

what about a plate and frame heat exchanger? cheap and heaps good heat transfer coefficient. just not sure on the pressure drops...

    something like this
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/10-Plate-Braz...item3c9e8cc17d

advantage is that they are easy to design so you can determine exactly what size you need for the heat duty you expect it to see

    trdee - that's a very interesting option. What's typical max oil pressure for a 4ag ?

im not sure mate but you can get plate and frame heat exchangers rated to ridiculous pressures

Some searching gives me typical oil pressures <100 psi; the link you posted has a design pressure of 1 mPa (145 psi) and is tested to twice that, so it should be ok pressure wise.

thats what the MB ones are like. seem to do the job quite well. And all the big 8s have an external cooler as well

No need for a thermostat with one of these? Pick a spot to tap water at the right temp?

A thermostat is less necessary, as the oil can never get colder than the coolant (~85 C). If your water takeoff is somehere after the thermostat, there will be no cooling until the water is up to temp.
The mr2 and laminova (and some US Ford?) coolers are designed to sit in the main radiator coolant flow; most of the others are plumbed into a bypass of some sort.

Unfortunately, I am not looking to cool 5 litres of MB v8 (hmmmm...)

Oil is also brought up to temp faster by these.
