Corona Speedo

A technical question, kinda. Anyone know how to (safely) remove the needles off the speedo fuel gauge etc etc in a rt 142 Corona dash ? I'm assuming I have to remove the needles so I can remove the plastic bits that cover the actual speedo fuel gauge etc. I've removed the screws holding the plastic bits on, but, the needles won't budge and I'm not game to get too physical with them..
