If you retain all of the factory plumbing, that may or may not be a restriction, simply jamming a pod filter inside the factory won't provide any performance gain.

Just spending money for the sake of it
you've just descirbed 95% of all pod filter installations

Agreed about the vtec type but those which have smaller engine bays that cant quite fit an airbox??

I guess as i get older i cant understand your points. Im thinking about putting more mufflers on the exhaust!

There are some cases where cars have very restrictive filters from the factory. The VL Turbo is one case, Doing a cold air intake with a 3" Pipe and a modified airbox makes a good difference on these cars.

Really I would first research before putting pods on, to find out whether the factory airbox is restrictive on whatever engine/car.

the VL airbox is restrictive, not the filter.. which is kinda the point....

yeah the filter in the commodore A360 is such a simple filter and works well. So does the A431 ( or is it the A491) off the falcons. and at $15 a pop its not bad value at all.

K&N number is KN33-2031-2 and about $90 and its yours....

i have a K&N panel brand new for this model V6 camry... it is FKCUING massive! i was going to use the airbox and this filter in my corolla.. but it was far too big..

the actuall element is quite large, so i can't see any tangable benifits from a smaller pod filter with less surface area...
