yep, 2jz-gte (both the vvti and non-vvti) are non-interference... although the cost of a tow-truck back from wherever you lunch the belt kinda offsets any gains you get from delaying the belt change by 20K kms

    bah, give a fuck

for $50 to tow IF it breaks, id rather not waste my time haha. i reckon u get more than an extra 20k out of them too.... ive only ever had 1 break on me and
    a) i had a front main seal leak
and b) was cruising along, minding my own business, not fanging it or anything. odo ticks over to 166,666km and BANG there goes the belt!
i was never superstitious before that, now i wonder about 666 being unlucky lol. needless to say i now drive VERY carefullly whenever any odo is showing x66,666

i reckon if it happend in a cressy (that i can work on with my eyes closed) id just come back with a belt & tools and do it on the side of the road, doesnt take long now lol

I guess that depends on where you drive your car.

personally, being half way between syd and melb at 5am is a shitty place to break down for a preventable reason, and would cost a SHITLOAD more than $50 to sort everything out.

    well obviously

but how often do you do that? 90% of the time most ppl would be within an hour of home.

in fact i am even going to sacrifice some compression in the 7m im building just to make it non-interference again, big cams mean valves will hit with flat tops

It is a relatively easy exercise. As others have said RWD engines are easier than FWD (except V6's!). But if you were going to pay anyone in the end WTF Auto are the guys you wanna see.

if you are getting parts for this go through rory at rutherford & bond toyota in NZ
balancer and water pump work out to be under $400AUD delivered... the balancer alone here in aus from toyota at trade price is around the $450 mark...

as others have said its a relatively easy job for someone who has a reasonable amount of knowledge...
also remove the radiator to do it (not sure if you would try leave it there as i dont know you personally)
and make sure you get the 2 Orings with the water pump for the little step up pipe...

Rory usually is pretty good with seals and O rings for the water pump though and im pretty sure he includes them all when he ships one out...

Sorry Draven, got to pull you up there. But the 2jz-gte VVTI is in fact an interference engine.

Sorry mate, got to pull you up there

2JZ-GE is, 2JZ-GTE isn't. In fact Draven had a timing belt snap on him

And I've check a VVTi 2jzgte (mine) to check if they are interference

    ^ ^ what he said.

Rest assured, I did a shitload of research into the 2jz-gte vvti when my timing belt snapped - they[re non-interference. (2jz-ge is interference).

    My valves are still intact

    *head explodes*

I could of sworn it was interence! Even the YouTube vid posted earlier I was sure he also confirmed it was interference.

But can't argue with a couple of toymodders with real 2jz-vvti to verify.
All this time I also was under the impression any of the Toyota motors with vvti were interference.

Well this is good, I'll no longer shun putting a 2jz-vvti into mk3.

if you ever want info on the late model 2jz, the uk sites are probably a good place to start, since they're one of the few countries they were delivered to.

I know beams 3s motors (at least fwd ones) are interference. I Saw the bent valves after the belt snapped.

Draven, what car did the UK get that had vvti 2jzs in them?

Is it safe to say all turbo vvti Toyota engines are non intereference?
And all NA vvti toyota engines are interence?
