Not sure how hard it is but I'd go genuine, especially for the water pump
Hi Guys
Just wondering how difficult it is to do the timing belt on a 2JZ-GTE in a MKIV Supra. Is it worth doing myself, i have done my TJ Magna timing belt which was a bitch but I got pretty good at it in the end, or should i just be paying someone.
If so, what does it normally cost to do timing belt, seals and I guess water pump if its back there on the 2J. Anyone good in Perth to take one too?
Does everyone use genuine belts and water pumps or are there better aftermarket jobbies?

bah if uve done it on a front wheel drive POS then anything RWD should be a walk in the park.

hahah - fair enough - yeah pulling engine mounts and trying to tap in seals with chassis rails in the way isn't fun. Thats why i was thinking of just paying someone.
Any idea how much the parts will set me back, and what workshops normally charge to do it all on a Supra?

If you did a magna then 2J will be easy as honestly and genuine pumps are not much more than aftermarket ones so check prices first as genunie stuff is always better.
the 2j really isn't too hard. also, it's worth replacing the tensioner on the belt too (it's a fairly cheap item anyway).
And check the condition of your harmonic balancer while you're down there - a mate's 2j just shat it, which cost an expensive tow!
it's easy as man!
did my aristo.. should get some cam and crank seals aswell while your there.. genuine wasnt expensive from memory.. the only hard part was the harmonic balancer! the bolt for it was tight as! while your there check your balancer for cracks.. they are expensive from memory
give it a shot mate it's not that hard
good luck!
opinions are like a** holes.. everyone has one but thinks everybody elses stinks
crank bolt = big f-off breaker bar wedged against the ground, and crank the motor over (after copious use of Inox/wd40 and a couple of taps with a hammer)
make sure coils are unplugged before cranking motor tho![]()

I just pulled the efi fuse to save filling my cylinders with petrol, but yeah![]()
cam and crank seals have to be genuine but the belt and tensioners are easy to get for around $120?
Destroyer of 'Drop Forged' spanners
try aftermarket viton seals, they are higher temp rated than genuine ones

Cheers guys
Lots of good info there - I'm picking the car up on Sunday, its done 104Ks and history is unknown at this stage, if it doesn't turn out that its been done already and there's a decent amount of proof to back it up - i will pull it apart and sort it all out.
Really don't want to lunch a 2J.....

AFAIK its a non interference motor chief, no valves hitting pistons if the belt breaks
i just leave mine til they snap lol
