Default Can exhaust welding cause electrical problems?

    Hi,

On my Celsior I have been getting problems with the transmission not kicking down, and also TRC Light on, Errors 19 and 45 (My Post Here)

Only thing that has been done to the car before this began happening was I took it to an exhaust shop to get Different tips welded on. Could this have caused any problems with the electrics?

    Thanks.

ive head that welding on the car can cause electrical problems

at the exhaust shop i work at we put anti zaps (that wat i call them?) on the battery terminals to stop and current that may try and get into the cars electrical system.

Do you know if the exhaust shop used them or disconnected the battery?

I saw they had the bonnet up, but if they had disconnected my battery the steering wheel position would have lost its memory like it does, so I don't think they disconnected my battery

well if the bonnet is up they must have had the anti zaps on, so the welding would not effect the cars electrical system.

Unless they has another reason to have the bonnet up?

Just call them and find out if they use them or not.

welding any part on the car can cause electrical problems ... mainly, the one i've seen, are related to the ECU ... that is why we connect anti-zap on before welding, or dis connect the battery.

there also cases that the anti-zap was connected but the "protection light" on the anti-zap didnt come on and as a result it causes problems with the ECU.

So welding it on the car with the battery terminals disconnected won't cause any problems?

ideally you disconnect the alternator, unplug the ECU and battery,

^^ agree with above.. the electrical current CAN in some cases cause abit of a surge thru the earth circuits in the car from what ive heard.. never experienced it but then again ive never taken the chance.... i disconnect the battery

once the battery is disconnected will there still be a chance of this, or do you HAVe to disconnect Alternator and ECU?

it's a matter of risk - I have no quick/cheap replacement for my ECU or alternator so I pull the plug on everything. Most factory manuals suggest unplugging the important stuff if welding on a car and I take that advice.

Just use an anti-zap. I've never seen a single car have any problems from welding with one of them fitted... or without one fitted for that matter.
The above opinion is just that - my opinion. It is not shared by any business that I am currently or have previously been involved with, nor any of their employee's.
