    Default Silvertop Oil Leak ?

    G'day,

today on the track i noticed an oil leak

it looks like its coming from the flex plate between the engine and gearbox at the front of the engine in front of the thermo fan.

Its fairly black oil and my engine oil is freash so i assume its gearbox oil

Where is the oil most likely coming from? is it common to leak in this area?

    thanks

rear and front seals respectively. To get to the rear you take the flywheel off and then unbolt it's housing and the front by memory requires you to take off the pulley, lower cover, belt retainer plate, belt gear drive and then the housing. Sounds like someone put too much oil in

i agree defanetely rear main oil seal and front engine seal.

it might not be too much oil could be blocked PCV system or the seals have just gone hard from not regularly changing the oil

true that about the PCV, the ones on a 20v are stupidly small. Pull it off the head and blow air through it both ways, should only work one way.

its that little plastic thing that does a 90 degree bend out of the cam cover near the oil filling point. It has a hose going into the chamber above the intake manifold. Just grab it and pull it out. Only the rubber seal holds it in so it's no issue doing it that way.

    No problems with that PVC.

I noticed when i toke the oil cap off with the engine running a fair bit of air was coming out is that normal?, when i rev it up it tends to go away or no blow out as hard

When you rev it, the rings seal tighter due to the increased combustion pressures. An amount of blow by is normal, even more so for an engine this age.

    Fair enough.

I pulled the box out this morning. I toke the fly wheel off and its abit wet around the back of the block but i was expecting there to be more oil. The flex plate was oily.

Seems alot of oil around the gearbox and when i toke the speedo drive out i swear i heard a washer fall into the box..

Can anyone confirm the part number/s for the rear main seal? Which is best, should i buy it from toyota?

    75w-90 is what you want.
I spent the money on Royal Purple, as the oil is seldom changed, and I want my box to be looked after.
