i just thought it odd to say there is no direct connection.. when it is about the ONLY linear direct connection..

No it does not. Cam timing, ignition timing, combustion chamber design are all important factors as well.

i suppose you meant "not by itself", rather than "no it does not"

maybe i'm just being pedantic due to reviewing journal articles atm, where you need to be clear and precise with meaning of words.....

edit: if EAP can work out detonation limits, maybe Bill or some other EAP enabled person can run a few quick specs, and see the sependence of various things on the timing before detonation...
