2JZ timing belt crank cog removal? Am I doing it wrong?

Hi all,

I need to remove the timing belt crank cog off of a 2jz, but it doesn't slide freely, I'm assuming it has never come off and has become stuck much like the crank bolt was. So I have quickly jury-rigged up a 'puller' much like a balancer puller using the two screw holes on either side of the crank. Like so:



IS THIS FINE TO DO/USE? or am I risking crank damage? I need to get this cog off today or worst case tomorrow. PS I have removed the safety tab that is prevents the cog sliding off, so it should just come off freely now but is stuck, is ther perhaps another locking mechanism that I don't know about?

dood, it will most likely be a right bitch if you dont pull it off square. (i.e. you need to use thicker plate and weld a nut onto the middle of the plate such that you can thread a bolt through it onto the end of the crank. (much like a steering wheel puller) (PS make sure you have sufficient engaged length of the bolts going into the pulley itself)

I'm doing a quarter tun on each bolt at a time so it should be pulling relatively square. I did originally try to use the ballancer puller but my bolts were too short. Maybe I'll go buy some longer bolts.

Past that, the idea/process/method of pulling the crank cog is sound tho? I wont be damaging the cog or crank my 'pulling' the cog off mechanically?

The methodology should be fine mate. Just make sure you have enough engaged thread before it starts to pull the cog off. PS. Longer bolts for your balancer pulley would be the way to go.

And here is the improvised tool I used; The bolts are 100mm 6M machine bolts, harmonic balancer puller and suitable sized bolt to sit in the crank hole. A socket can also be used



Also, for those doing cam/crank/etc seals get your self a lieslys shaft type seal puller. Fkn awesome tool

Next time remove the woodruff key in case it catches on the gear keyway

Believe it or not I actually tried to remove it, but like every thing else in the area it was stuck, so rather then risk damaging it while trying to remove it, I just pulled it off slowly to make sure it wouls slide past.

Thanx for the heads up tho, any hints on popping it out?

Sometimes I have to use a chisle or screwdriver. Sometimes they can be pushed out with your fingers and other times they get damaged and you need a new one. You can also try tapping it downward with a drift so that it curls out on the radius of the keyway half circle.

you dont have to take the key out just make sure its rust and grime free before pulling the gear off the crank snout...

but yeh your on the right track.. just need a stronger puller, just becareful not to damage the thread inside the crank or youll really be in the shit..

but in case you want to.. best way to remove a woodruff key is to tap it on the ends with a pin punch to free it up and get it moving, once it is moving, hit it on one end only till it wont move anymore and grab it gently with sidecutters and lever against the crank..... it always works for me at work

I also use the harm balancer puller to double as the crank pulley remover (after something decided to chew off 2 teeth of my crank pulley, which resulted in a shredded belt... but that's another story)

My woodruff key was floating when I removed crank pulley... advantage of an engine that's only 7 years old I guess.

that last picture is exactly how i did it

the last time my car broke down, it wouldnt start.
in the end the problem was the teeth on the back of the cog which triggers the cas had seperated from the cog itself

if you use bolts, make sure they are high tensile, grade 10.8 or better.


a puller kit as photoed above works best though

Last time i did a front main seal i screwed a self tapper into it and ripped the bastard out with vice grips i did a rear main yesterday, that was easier cuz i just removed the seal retainer and bashed the thing from the other side. still would be good to know of an easy way.
the only seal puller ive seen is like this one and it just slipped around and munted the inside of the seal without removing it... maybe i shoulda given it more of a fair test though i just used it on one seal and didnt like it
