maybe another option sell the ute and buy a one of the hiace with the twin doors on the back, it has a/c and room, Just a thought maybe cheaper then $$$$$ on A/c setup....

i'd go a twin-cab ute - we made up some big foam-filled cushions to fill the space between the front& rear seats and our two hounds (alsation & labrador) could lounge across the back in comfort and style. Tray is obviously smaller but you'll have more weight over the rear wheels and decent towing capacity.
It is a twin cab - but the dogs in the front is a pain in the arse... one in particular is a real problem as she can't sit still...
Currently we do take the dogs in the front - which is why I am not in an urgent rush to do something about it, but it would be nice to just let the wet dirty dogs sit in the tray on the way back from the river/lake/etc.

The glass is neither half empty nor half full, rather the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.
we ended up making a 1-peice canvas cover for the entire rear - it hooked over the rear and front head-rests and a small cut-out around the centre console. dirt/sand either stayed on the cover or fell down next to the doors. Was fairly easy to clean, even after a trip to the beach.
