Default Charcoal Canister Removal - Venting at the tank

    Hey guys,

Just plumbing the fuel lines on my race car & I want to be able to use the breather line for a return line. Now before you read me the riot act, its a track car only, it hasn't had a charcoal canister for the 2 years I've ran it and I haven't had a problem.

Originally I just removed the canister & connected the in/out lines together where it vents into the chassis rail. But now I want to use the breather line for my EFI return.

Im thinking of using maybe a carby filter on the breather at the tank. My Only problem being this is a car that will get regulary driven on the dirt/mud so Im not sure if it will cause problems.

Im open to any suggestions or any kind of specialized valves/filters for this purpose

    Regards,
    Phill

Remember that the tank will still need to breathe, so you will still need a breather line open to atmosphere. I probably wouldn't use a fuel filter as it is designed for filtering liquid rather that air, so don't know how effective it would be, you could hit up your local parts shop for emissions-type filters (eg for engine breathers, catch tanks etc), but not sure how small they would go. Or another idea is a motorbike shop, they would possibly have small breather filters for crankcases/fuel tanks etc.

what do you want the breather filter to achieve?

a little k&n catch-can breather would probably be ideal if you don't mind some of the petrol vapour escaping.. otherwise yeah, carby filters will be your friend.

The k&n ones go quite small... and will probably last longer if you can find somewhere that doesn't get absolute shitloads of dust

you really want those fumes to vent to the atmo or get burnt in the engine. A catch-can breathe is only going to let those fumes into the trunk area (e.g. fire hazard).

If you don't want to run another line up to the engine bay, at least enclose the mini filter and vent that cannister to outside the car.

I was thinking vent to outside the car, not anywhere in the cabin

I noticed my GT4 had a small valve that vented into the chassis rail next to the engine.
It allows vapor out of the tank, but not back in.

Well I ended up going the fuel filter route. A friend suggested looking at what people use for diff breathers in 4x4s, which happened to be fuel filters as well

The idea of the filter is to stop it sucking any crap when the tank is under vacuum (ie: fuel getting used!) As you can see from the pic the bottom of my car gets very dirty from racing on dirt & use in the farm through mud

Its plugged into a chassis cavity similar to what i had before. I just drilled a hole bigger, put a bung in it and shoved some of the hardline from the old breather setup

I will see how I go, it should be running again in a few weeks
