I always use Toyota Seal Packing. Not cheap but won't leak. As for getting it off later it is not ideal.
What are people using to seal their sumps?
Is it possible to get something that seals good but doesn't cause a headache when removing the sump at a later time?

Black RTV, no gasket for me.
Do Toyota even do a gasket for the 4A sump?? My manual just shows the sealant placement, no mention of a gasket.

Been using black RTV but im sorta hoping there is something that will make removal slightly easier?
Maybe i should just cut down on the amount i use?
I was thinking of actually using a gasket as it may help removal and i have heaps of them.
They're not designed for gaskets but the only issue i can see is bolt length but my allen bolts should have plenty left.

Problem is the risk causing damage to the sump and baffle.
Engine im doing today i hope to never remove again but i have another that i would like to check inside at least twice a year.
To get the sump off just a couple of downward taps with a rubber mallet on the sump section will release the RTV.

I've never left so much as a mark using the razor blade to cut the sealant the whole way around and then use the paint scraper to separate them.
I'd understand if it were a screwdriver or something because people do a lot of damage with those but a razor blade, while slow going, works a treat.

How much are people putting on?
I'm always worried about leaks so do a decent smear both sides of the baffle.
There is no way a tap with a mallet ever removes mine.
Its always a matter of at least a few levers around the sump before it starts moving.
A single bead around the pan lip, bead thickness probably about 4-5mm.
Nip it all up to just on finger tight, then apply final torque a short while later.

I'd say that's my problem. I'm basically glueing it on instead of just creating a seal.
Not a problem till you need to remove it.
Thanx guys, time to put it back together.
Toyota Seal Packing Black P/N 08826-00080A, current list incl GST is $37.30.
4A and almost everything from that vintage onwards do not specify a sump gasket, just the sealant.

I've done mine twice in the last year and both times it's leaked.
First time I used half a tube of Permatex blue/clear sealant, applied to both the sump and the baffle, tightened fully, and left for a day to set. Straight after I put it together it was leaking, and that was following the instructions. The bead was about 5mm or so, also detailed on the instructions.
Second time using the same sealant but nearly the entire tube - I thought initially I handn't used enough. This time though I let it set for a little bit, only slightly tightening the bolts. Then doing a final torque once set. It still leaks. This time the bead was huge, I really didnt want to do it again when I pulled it off it looked like the 5mm was not enough.
In both instances the surfaces were immaculately clean.
Next time I can be bothered I'll definately be using a different sealant.
