Hi
I discovered that some nameless, inexperienced fool (oops) managed to strip the threads in one of the cylinder head holes in the engine i am rebuilding. The block is fine apart from this, so i would prefer to fix it rather than buy a new one.
I was thinking that over sized head studs would be best, as they will definatly be stronger than the origional bolts.
Has anyone installed oversized studs in a 4age block?
Is there any other way i could/should fix this?
Bonus ettique question: if I am likely to have a lot of silly questions, should i have one thread with a more general title, or multiple threads with specific titles?
Thanks for the help
As mentioned - timesert is the only way to go. Way better than helicoils.
Fit up heli coils. What you have to do is find out what size is the original bolt size is. Buy a heli coil kit which will have drill, tape, heli coils & tools to fit them. All you have to do is drill the original hole out larger, tape a new thread, then wind in new heli coil into place. Easy & are alot stronger than the original thread. You can also get different length heli coils too
Thanks.
I have to send the block into a machine shop, so I might get them to do it, but it is good to know that this is easy to fix.
edit: seems like there is no real difference between the 2 methods; both drill a larger hole, then tap a thread into it. the heli-coil just has an extra bit that allows you to use the original bolts. is there something else that i'm missing?
timesert is much stronger than a helicoil.... helicoils dont really like extreme torque
