Default Fitting a 1JZ with Auto into 77 celica,Auto indication for Dash is it needed for Rego

Hi all is there any info on what year if any they started using dash mounted (P-R-N-D-1-2) etc for indicating what gear is selected?
Im neally finished my 1jz/Auto install into RA23 1977 Celica and it had manual fitted and as 77 model i dought they had indictaion on dash for Autos anyway, but if anyone has the low down on this or even a after market module that can be retro fitted into my vechile as would be nice for the misses and friends that my drive to have this staring them in the face.
Thanks in advance.Long Live the OLD RWD TOYOTAS.

Well, I dont know when it started, but sufficed to say I would imagine somewhere in the early 80's i would think.

My 84 cressida has a row of vertical lights for the gear indication as do many of the cars from that era. you may be better off retrofitting one from one of them.

A 77 auto celica would not have the dash mounted gear indicator. It still relied upon the gear indicator on the shifter itself.

a lot of the new toyotas we sell don't have it as they now use a gated auto shift. dash gear position indicator was never 'required' by any adr which I am aware of.

Ozi, there is a row of lights to the left of the main instruments in an RA23. The second one down is used as a brake warning light, all others are unused. Simply reassign the brake warning light to another location in the instrument cluster, you then have 5 windows to show gear indication PRNDL. Get some different coloured plastic to differentiate between the important gear positions. Find a gear selector switch off an old MS112 Crown and use the wiring from that to light the little windows. But as mentioned these old girls never had any other indication other than on the shifter. Your engineer is blowing smoke up your ass requiring this indication in a car of that age.

    cheers Chuck.
